Winchester or Springfield stock

From the very faint cartouch stampings on my Garand stock, I conclude that I have a Winchester stock from WWII. My receiver is Springfield. And, given the whole point of standard dimensions and interchangeable parts, who knows what my trigger assembly and such is.

Anyway, the guy at the gun store told me that the Win stock is very rare and desirable and suggested that he knew a guy that would pay me $400 for the stock. Hard to believe. I would like a real, WWII (ser. no. on receiver dates to April, 1945) Springfield stock. Ideas?

Well Jim, the gun store dealer is somewhat right. Depending on the condition of the stock it can go for twice that or more. Pictures would be great if you can post some. I hate telling you that for I need a WRA stock :D

As far as an April of 45 SA stock, you need to look for an SA/NFR (Gen. Norman F. Ramsey) small Ord. wheel cartouched stock. They are out there and can be expensive also but nowhere near the cost of the WRA stock.

Thanks. As near as I can tell, the first line is faint and begins with a W, and the second line is less faint and is definitely GHD. The Armory cartouche is faint and barely visible. There are two proof marks: one with a ring around it, and an apparently newer "P" stamp without a ring.

I hope it's not too disappointing, but as I say the stamps are very faint at this point. Here's pics. May be hard to see...

The rest of the stock is probably a mismatch - there is finish on the fore-stock wood, and both of the non-main wood parts are much lighter than the main part.

That looks like a WRA profile to me. Pull the trigger housing and snap a photo of the bottom looking and where the trigger is. The cut at the rear should be a "V" cut.

You can't see the WRA, but you can see the GHD. That's the deal, right: WRA/GHD?

Don't have time for a pic, but I looked and it's the one on the right, the Winchester.

So...what is it you're asking? Should you sell the stock and replace it with SA stock? I suppose but the correct ones are still expensive. Is it Winchester? Yes, and as to what it's worth, why don't you start by PM with Bill and see if he has something to trade you for that stock. You may be able to sell it, but then you need to replace it. Or do you just want to part the gun out?

Well, first I should say that none of this stuff is very urgent: I don't lie awake thinking about this. It's just that I shot the rifle recently and started to do a little research.

I'd like to get the correct stock for my SA receiver Garand. Not to be too mercenary, but I'd like to do this in a way to minimize costs or to maximize gain. The guy at the gun store told me that a client of his would probably give me $400-500 bucks for my WRA stock. What would a good, age-appropriate SA stock go for?

I have another post talking about some scoring in the gas tube, and that's functional, so I'd like to fix that first. If someone has a more urgent need for the WRA stock, please PM me.

And thanks for the expert help. I can't wait to shoot this firearm again.
