I've searched but can't find the year

I believe it to be a savage as its stamped with an [S] in a square before No4 MK1* It is also stamped on the left side of the breech US PROPERTY. But I've searched the sites and can't find a listing telling me what year this serial is, or if there is anything special about it. It's been tucked away in a closet for years and just wanting to see what I've been holding onto.

It is serial number 77C7704 and has a B stamped under the number.

Any help or info leading my in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

That should make it the latter half of '43. (approx 40C to 84C).

Also do you know how I would tell if this is an unissued rifle? I've checked the bore and breech (though I've not had it checked by a professional) and from what my neighbor, father, and I can tell, It doesn't appear that this rifle has ever been fired. Although when I got it from my father who had owned it for several years he told me when he had got it, it had been surplus packed in cosmoline before he got it.

I would start by assuming that is isn't because to be so would be highly unlikely.

77C7704 is the serial number of your rifle. The "C" means it is a Savage. They started numbering at 0C1 and after reaching 0C9999 they went to 1CXXX, and so on.

After they got to 99C9999 they 'started' again at to 0C00001 up to the 0C38XXX or so. Savage are the only ones that managed to get beyond 999,999

A question I have had that has gone unanswered is what did the serial number for the one-millionth rifle look like? I have been able to track down the rifle, but it is in storage and so far I have not been able to get it looked at, but I am getting closer, I recently rec'd an "Application for Research" form I need to submit.

Was it 1000000, 1C00000, or 0C00000?
