Cops and Robbers

Back in the 50's the Detroit Police Department issued M1 Carbines to many officers in various precincts. A few years ago, Allan from Allan's Armory got four of these and offered them for sale for $450.....I got the nicest one, an Inland SN 5077355. I really love this carbine and take it with me when downrange on the farm. I have taken 4 Yotes and a Bobcat with the gun and it has never jammed or been the slightest problem. I have accumulated lots of spare parts while restoring several carbines and used these parts to trade for Inland parts. At this time it has a correct rear sight, trigger group, buttplate, recoil plate, bolt, slide and mag catch. Other than the front sight, band and safety she is pretty much all Inland.....oops, the stock is unmarked and the handguard is a Winchester. I take real good care of this gun and oil the stock with Linseed oil regularly. So here is the DPD's 7th Precinct rack 18 still getting the "bad guys" Regards, Rick.

Probably. I have tried to contact the DPD several times to find out how many they had and when they were in service......Nobody can remember I guess because they have never returned a call. Regards, Rick.

I heard a story about an old Detroit cop that retired, and was gifted his Thompson that he used to disuade looters with. I was raised across the Detroit River about 30 miles east. I remember seeing the flames glow in the night sky. Although we had our share of problems when the FLQ started up in '70, it wasn't a shade of that mess. I remember being driven along the Canadian side of the river and seeing the other side of the river all black and smokey.

The 82nd and 101st were there, Michigan National Guard and multiple police agencies.
We would park as close as possible after church (true story).
My Father had a job going down town with quite a few pieces of heavy equipment parked there.
About a week afterward, he grabbed handfulls of carbine mags from a near by dumpster.

We had tickets to see the Detroit Tigers play Baltimore, but it was called off.

My department bought about 60 surplus M1 carbines just after 9/11 to issue as patrol rifles for some of our sheriff's deputies. I was fortunate enough to be assigned to go through them and make 'em work. They gave top notch service though we've just about phased them out for the full time deputies, though some have chosen to continue to carry theirs and a number of reserve officers still use them.

I got one of those myself. Mine is a Rock-Ola with most matching parts.

I called Detroit and spoke with their Armorer. He told me that these were sold some years ago, and about 5 years after they sold them, the PD destryed the maintenance/record books.
I gave them my PD numbers but they couldn't help me.

It would have been nice to know when/where/who the rifle traveled with and what it "saw"

That's what I was told too! What a shame that the provenance of these guns was lost. Does yours have a matching magazine? Regards, Rick.
