A Short Snider

It doesn't fit any of the types in what reference books are on hand, so it may just be an old chop job done for the civilian market.

Needs help, but the bore isn't bad.

I´ve heard it said that if you can´t stick your finger in it, a crack is not relevant (but maybe in a different context).

Yes, a fun project for JM there! It looks as if the crack was previously pegged, and the pegs (or screws?) failed. So there might be a problem with old glue in the crack. On the other hand, the crack does not appear to go through to the right side (lockplate area).
JM, I hope the photos I posted some time ago of the Westley Richards Monkeytail will encourage you to have a go at this. Removing the previous fudged repair will probably be the most laborious part of the job.

I see the barrel & action have commercial proofs (can't read the lock markings), so not a military-issue rifle at any point in its life.....so it doesn't have to fit into any particular pattern. Appears to have three groove rifling, whereas most military carbines & short rifles has five groove (1:48"), as opposed to the 3-band's three groove 1:78". Looks like a nice handy little fella, did you get the stock repaired?

It IS handy. But, no, have been engaged with a long range handgun shooting obsession for over a year. Haven't hardly picked up a rifle in some time. 100yd shooting is much more involved with the stockless firearms! And getting my usual shooting friend out to longer ranges has been difficult at best, lately. Scores rising in the IHMSA game, though.
