Hi all.
I recently became the owner of a Springfield M1903, 8xx,xxx which I gather puts the manufacture date in 1918. The barrel is SA stamped 10-30 and it has a C stock.
Can anyone give me a sense of when this barrel was manufactured and whether or not the stock was substituted as part of some re-arsenal process?
So...the barrel was made in 10 of 30...and the original stock would have been the straight grip...now, that could have been altered anywhere along it's journey to you by anyone that had it...not necessarily an arsenal.
But it is also possible that it was an arsenal rebuild. This is what it says in "The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and its Variations" by Joe Poyer: "The Type 6 C Stock was aproved on March 1928. From 1928 through 1939 most C stocks appear to have been installed only on some service rifles submitted for a complete rebuild."Quote:

I've been wanting to add one to the collection but was deliberating if the premium over a modern rebuild was worth it as I like to shoot my MILSURPs.

Keep in mind that Joe Poyer's "Type" designations have to basis in military use and are a convenience only. Your rifle was overhauled, probably more than once. The original barrel would have been made sometime in 1918.
You can post a couple of more digits of your serial number without having any security problems.
The first three are 873 - I appreciate the help. If nothing else, I'm getting quite the history lesson as I browse the forums and exercise my Google-fu.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get these photos up but I can relay this - the only marks I can find on the stock are a stamp near the rear sling loop 'D1836' and under the mag cutoff, an S above a 9. On the top of the bolt handle are a 2 and a 7 but they are inverted from one another. On the bolt behind the extractor are a w and a 5. I have not yet attempted to see what it's like with the stock removed.

D1836 is the drawing number and correct for a Type 6 C Stock.
