Izawa Jyuku Type 99

Was at my LGS today and found a widow trying to sell/consign some firearms in her late husband's collection. After some discussion her son in law told me they had a Jap bayonet in the car. He brought it in with a large long box under his arm. Behold an Arisaka Type 99 with bayonet. She also showed some capture papers. He was a Navy corpsman. Story goes someone hauled a crate of rifles and bayonets onboard. The skipper said have your pick and these are what he chose.

I am having trouble identifying the series. Should be 4th/9th according to sources. Ground mum. My pic is not so good.

Any ideas? Worth? I am trying to help her sell these. She has an NCO sword also.

thats a series 9 with the transitional thin butt plate, and fixed peep sight. nice looking rifle and bayonet even though it is ground. if the capture papers are NUMBERED to the rifle it can increase the value decent bit. if they are generic papers without serial number, then it won't add as much. IF they are numbered to the rifle, id say you are in the $475 range to $500 range to a serious collector who really wants them. most people will poo poo it because of the ground mum, but i love them! if they are for sale, let me know as i would like to have them!

Thanks Mariness. The capture paper unfortunately not SN'd to the rifle. Just states Jap rifle with bayonet. Not sure if bayo ground. It actually looks unissued out of the scabbard. I believe those marks on the edge are from moving it in and out of the scabbard. No serial number. My pics were phone pics at the LGS so not the best. I found it unusual the scabbard tip has no ball. I read a story today about the factory where they where built. Very interesting info about their labor force and methods. Was your price estimate including the bayo/sheath?

Would you know anything about Japanese short swords? She has one of those to with capture paper. Looks like a short sword. Did not get pics on that one. I plan on doing a follow up with her in next couple days.

That would be unusual, perhaps a Wakizashi ...the mid size sword. Pics would be nice. I don't think the bayonet arsenals made those. It might be special.

I think mid size is correct. I did not take photo's as I was concentrating on the rifle/bayo and I know zilch about swords. Nothing fancy, high gloss black wood scabbard(?). Missing hangar device. I will get a pic. Anything I should concentrate on in the photos? Thanks.

The sword could just be a blade in the typical lacquer wood mounts. These would be from blade smiths and would stay that way until someone bought them and had them mounted in a sheath, tsuba, and saya. Tang signatures on the blade would tell the story of value. The big thing to look for is temper lines in the blade, tang signature, etc. if it is mounted, then check for a family mon.

That said, the price value above is for both the bayonet and rifle. They both look correct and finish looks original on both. I am serious about purchasing them if you want to sell

Agreed on the sword, as to what has been said. There could be a great deal to look at. These men took hereditary blades with them and dressed them in working garb. Some very fine blades have been found in the old days of collecting. You need bags of pics on that one for these folk to asses them.

Some additional info and pics. Numbers matching receiver/bolt. Appears to be some kind of grease on receiver. Bore appears chromed. Deep lands/grooves, little dirty. Bayonet in some kind of grease. SN'd. Appears unused.
