type 2 sight

Ok not really too worried about putting back to Factory original. Just want to be able to see the winchester on my receiver. I now have a type 3 rear sight. If I put a type 2 (correct one for my sn) are they smaller than the type 3 and will I be abler to see some of the Winchester?

Up front you guys have been great on helping me get to know my new to me carbine. What a fun gun.

I have not ruled out a type 1 but usgi ones that are not reproductions are up there in price. I like to keep as much as possible usgi. I do have some new springs and they work great.

I do not believe it matters. The adjustable sights are all pretty much the same from the milled to the stamped. The principle factor on manufacturer visibility is its position on the receiver with any adjustable sight. If I understand correctly, the Type 2 is the original milled adjustable sight and the Type 3 is the stamped version. I have a Type 2 on my Inland and the manufacturer is obscured. You can find pictures of carbines with the adjustable sight where the maker is clear. Some makers shifted the name and serial number back so it would be visible with the adjustable sight. My Inland is a transitional from the Type 1 sight and examples in its range have either sight. There was no revision at that time at Inland to shift the maker so it could be seen. The maker was not a factor for the military. They only needed the serial number to be in the clear.

What is the date on your Inland? I have a 4-44 that has the type 2 sight.

Its 4.927, barrel date 1-44. H.I. milled sight.

No a type 2 sight will still block the Winchester name. A type 1 will allow you to see it and the serial number again. If it's got crater type stake marks on it then why not just get a reproduction type 1. It really won't matter that much if it's a square S original or not as the craters make it obvious to anyone looking at it and it will shoot the same as an original.

What if front sight blade is set up for the rear adj sights 100 setting?

I'd be afraid that Repro (out of specs) site may mess up the dovetail edges.

If a repo site is too wide then a light filing will reduce the width of the base to fit. I will say well over 90% of the front sights on carbines have not been replaced or filed down from when they were first sighted in with a type 1 rear sight.

I believe that the first adjustable rear sights on Winchesters were the stamped type 3 starting in spring 44, mixed with type 1s as available. I have a 5.6 (3/44) that is thought to have the original sight on it, it is a type 3 Hemphill and it covers the name so well that for a decade or so I didn't even know it was a Winchester. My 5.4 Inland has the original Type 2 PI sight, barrel date 8-44.

Here's a couple of mine that are close to DaveHH's: A 5.6 Winchester with a Type 1 "Square S" rear sight and undated barrel. A 5.4 Inland with a Type 3 I.R.CO. rear sight and barrel date 8-44. - Bob
