Range day with a No4T and DCRA No4

Well, had some beautiful weather these past few days, low to mid 70's, and made a date to hit the range. Of course today, when I get there at opening, the temp is up 95 degrees!

Still had a good time. Picture is rifle AP8156, a rifle I found nearly two years ago at a gun-show, minus a scope. Back in August, Colin (Seaforth72) found the matching scope and mount for AP8156 attached to a different No4T. Bought the lot a reunited the two.

Put together some handloads last night and had fun putting holes in paper. Pictured is the best group of the day, 1-1/4" x 1-3/8" at 100 yards. Fought a pretty heavy mirage (lateral stringing), but this rifle will still hold its own.

And as always, the Long Branch No4 in 7.62 is dead on at 200 yards.

I am glad that I was able to help. My Lee-Enfield sniper research database has been built up using dozens of informants willing to share their rifle and scope information and I have been able to help others in turn to match up scopes and rifles (e.g. “valley sniper) and I too have been helped. “Lee Enfield” found the matching Canadian REL C No. 32 Mk.II for one of my Long Branch sniper rifles and I was able to purchase it..

The Milsurps system appears to be faulty. Badger informed me a little while ago that my mailbox is not full and Badger can write to me, but it seems that no one else can. You are the second person to advise that my mailbox shows as “full”. Nor will the system enable me to delete old messages as the controls to do that do not appear for me. A puzzle and Catch-22 situation.

some good shooting there fella, do these old girls like flat base or boat tail projectiles? i want to load some up for my T replica as is a bit picky on what factory ammo it uses. also is there a T database about to see what scope went on what rifle?

For my rifles, the bullet selection varies from gun to gun. For the No4T pictured, it will only shoot flat base bullets, in either 150, 174, or 180 grain. It shoots well with IMR 4064, 3031, or 4895. Group sizes hover just below the 1.5 inch mark. With spitzers or boat-tails, groups open up to 2.5 to 3.5 inches.

For my another T (a Savage T-less, of all things), I got it to print just under an inch with Sierra 174 BTHPs. Anything else is 2 inches.

And then I have a 1944 No4, nearly mint in the crate with a mirror barrel. 2.5 inch groups all day, no matter what bullet/powder combination. Except it doesn't like Varget.

One thing I have learned over the years is I seat the bullets out as far as possible without hitting the front of the magazine. For me, cartridge overall lengths of 3.075 to 3.080 appear to be optimum.

Half the fun is building up loads to see what works in each rifle/scope combination. Best to start reloading a variety of bullets and see what happens. Plus, I just enjoy the range time.

yes reloading and spending a bit of time shooting is fun alright, i have some 4895 and i heap of win760 that im sure will be fine and a bit of old canadian tracer brass, i do alot of hunting here and i reload for my hunting rifles so im keen to load something up for the no4T and take it up the hills chasing deer and tahr. i used to shoot tahr with my mosin sniper but anyone who has fired one of them knows how ugly they are to use with next to no cheek weld... at least the T is nice to shoot with.

Nice shooting. Do those DCRA 7.62mm conversions have a heavier barrel than normal hidden away under the wood?

That part, I do not know. Skennerton's book only mentions the lack of bayonet lugs; nothing about the weight of the 7.62 barrel. I have never pulled the wood off this rifle for fear of upsetting the bedding. What I do know is the barrel is free floated at the muzzle, and is glass-bedded around the action.
