Bought a Savage No4 T ... help???

I recently acquired potentially a 1942 Savage No MK I (T) rifle... less scope/pads/cheek piece. First off I paid $700 for it. It has the holes on the side of the receiver, and you can see where the receiver was relieved to have the pads fit... secondly the stock has two holes, which appear to have been there for a long time... The bad... the rear sight was removed and the mounting holes shaved off, plusreceiver was drilled on the bolt side to accept an aftermarket peep. The side of the receiver is marked with a "T" but the wrist is not marked. Unfortunately the butt stock has been slightly sanded smooth and stock markings are hard to see.

Bought an Accumount pads/mount.... Scope ring screws are junk.. Bought Numrich scope.. NEED a Cheek Riser... Any ideas? Sarco out, Numrich out... looks like I need a beech one?

Included a shot group... from the rifle PPU 174 Match. Any comments/suggestions etc. appreciated.

You can get cheek pieces from DS solutions Sniper Cheek Piece (Walnut) for No4(T) L42A1 Rifle
I would also suggest replacing the buttstock, since it seems to have some unofficial contouring around the wrist.

Always nice to find a restorable "T" If you decide to repair the missing sight "ears" I've got a few junk Savage actions and I could zip-disk you off a pair. ;) Since the finish is so nice on your receiver, a discreet silver solder job might be best, though the heat will affect that somewhat.

Pity about the butt, does it have the "S51" stamp on the underside and/or the rifle serial number of the rifle on the "tongue" (the part that goes into the butt socket on the receiver)?

I expect B.D.L. Ltd. could find you the right butt and cheekrest; the original would have been beech, only the Canadian cheekrests were walnut.

I will check the stock for the sn# today. Unfortunately some bubba decided to sand the rear butt stock smooth. I’d need a magnifying glass or something to see if I can detect any exterior stock markings. I think regarding the rear sight ears... might just do without. I had originally planned on making a clone T, found a good donor, bedded, floated, accuracy tested etc. Then I found this locally for sale..... I’ve been hesitant to take it out of the stock. Seems to be shooting better than my bedded one thus far.

Yes, bubba decided to smooth it down with sand papers. Criminal!

If I were the OP I would seriously consider the offer of a piece of scrap No4 receiver containing the rear sight axis pin 'ears'. If you accurately position them (that will require some care) you will successfully remedy what is to me the biggest problem that Bubba gave it! Everything else, relatively speaking, is cosmetic. If the OP wants a set of top quality body pads that are very close to the originals, then I would suggest those made by Fultons of Bisley. They will be a lot more expensive than the Pacific Rim variants, but the Fulton examples are accurately machined & also look like the originals.

What was the distance for shooting? I am contemplating the repro scope for my Savage No.4 (T) Less Telescope.

My Weaver will group well at 200 yards, but the eye relief is set too far rearward.

The group was shot at 100 yards... I had some other tight groups that I should have taken pics of as well.

I did check the buttstock for the SN# under the wrist ring. The serial number is there... hard to read - but there.

I will check Fultons of Bisley. I shot at the Bisley Ranges in 2000 and 2001 and actually have a TA 50 (Territorial Army Top 50 Award).

Nice looking rifle!Wondering what receiver and wrist markings you have on your metal, plus what stock markings? My stock markings are almost nonexistent.
