I bought this barrel at auction years ago, and it was listed as a 1905 Ross barrel. Now that I come to use it I notice that it doesn't match any of the ones I have or that I can find online. What is it? Is it a commercial Ross barrel perhaps?

Looks to be a MkII barrel that had been set back to cure the LC chamber.
Thanks. Flying Pig is that why it doesn't have the normal knox form profile? Has it been on a lathe to remove the flat part behind the slope? Sorry, I'm not sure what the LC chamber issue is/was.

I've found the thread where US barrels were indexed 180 degrees and shortened 7.8 of an inch, which answers my questions.
One last one occurs to me - is it safe to use? Should I load reduced charges to be safe?

Large chamber to fit oversize British ammo. Turning off a few thou allows you to recut the chamber and usually a full turn is done. Then you have a fresh chamber that will be to specification. It's as safe now as it ever was...possibly. As much as we can see from here...Quote:

My Ross has one of those barrels. I question safety with full loads as the cartridge extends way beyond the heavy chamber. Maybe I'm wrong. We debated this a while back.

Tests were done with M1903 rifle barrels where the metal was removed to virtually paper thin and it took that much before the barrels burst during firing. Unless you are plugging the bore...Hatcher's notebook has the details of these tests.Quote:
