Brrr!!

The better part of 3' of ice remains on my lake here in northern MN. +44F a couple of days ago, -16F last night. 2' of snow on most of the roof. Beats ankle-deep gumbo mud, wind and cold rain this time of year back in KS where I grew up. My wife and I celebrated our 29th "meeting" anniversary on Valentine's Day - she came out to my brother's hog farm to visit my sister-in-law who was a long-lost friend of hers and found me castrating pigs in the rain, mud and other stuff. Long story I won't go into here.

Seriously, the warm humid air from the Gulf of Mexico mixing with the colder air from the North makes for some interesting sudden weather changes here in north Texas. :runaway:

I was finishing basic at Lackland in early Oct 1969. the day before we shipped out we had red flags out meaning it was to hot for outside activities but the next afternoon as I waited for my bus I was wearing my winter Blues and freezing my patootie off.

Live about 20 minutes (not speeding) west of bearhunter and it -15 C right now (+5 F) and too cold for me. This has been one miserable winter especially compared to a year ago and we have not gone to the range that often.

I and everyone here are totally fed-up with winter right now considering the low temperatures this time of the year should be around -3 C. Look forward to a change in a week when we are apparently going to get to more normal temperatures.

As an Air Force brat I lived through some blizzards in Mizz and NH and while at AF Tech school myself we marched to school at Chanute AFB IL. in Feb 79 in 50 below wind chill and had 1/2 a dozen cases of frost bite. The next day it was -65 wc and we snuck out to say we survived. I recall it was 5min max. In England I made it to the fire station (remote base where I worked) in a 68 VW beetle only to be snowed in for five days,until the plows could get us out. I would rather have been snowed in at my off base digs as it was across from a fish and chip shop and 2 doors down from a pub. They almost did an air drop as we were on an inactive air strip and were low on food. The plows showed up just as the leftovers ran out.

Would have made for an interesting range report though. I wouldn't mind knowing know how some semi autos operate under extreme cold conditions. What had you planned to shoot?

Just remember fellows that in Canada we have two seasons: winter and August !!!

I read several accounts from survivors of Chosen. Several said instead of using grease they shaved graphite from a pencil to lube their rifles. They said the grease froze up in the bitter cold.

The Piebald Redpolls have appeared. Spring is only 2 - 3 months away now. Got to dig the old Toro lawmower out of the snow and get new drive-wheels put on as soon as I can get through the 4 - 5' drifts to find it. Saw the handle sticking up through the snow a few days ago until we got another 3" of snow yesterday.
