What a great story. Good on you for doing that for your dad!
Thanks for the words of encouragement enfield. Sorry BAR I don't have my father's .45 but I'm trying to save up and buy a ww2 or Korean war vintage 1911 to give him since he had one that was that old.
Lots of guys did from what I heard.
You found his ACTUAL helmet?? The one in the photo?? I can't even begin to describe the utter awesomeness of that. I think this is about the best story I've heard this year.....WELL DONE!
I'm sorry to say this but ain't no way those two covers are the same. Camo pattern doesn't match, the thumbs are at totally different angles and the fingers don't match. There's not ONE feature I can match to the original.
Did this man contact you and offer to sell the cover to you? I think you've been had by a scumbag.
He has a point, the center finger's not on the seam of the cover any more. It's now just off the side...
I suspected this all along but I didn't really take the time to closely examine the two. After taking a real good look it is obvious they are not the same cover. Shame.
To clear the air for everyone: They are both the same helmet cover. My dad remembered every drawing he did on this cover to the T and when he looked at it he knew it was his. He even showed me on it where he erased messed up markings with his spit and sure enough they were there (something I never knew mind you). Also I asked him about the color issue and he said that the natural lighting in those pictures didn't show the true color that his cover was (he always said that it was the green side that he drew on even though it looked tanner). Also I took the cover off before I shot this picture so that I could make sure there wasn't any screw up and when I put it back on I had shifted it from where it had originally been. The gentleman that had this helmet never offered to sell it to me but I had to convince him to "sell" it for roughly $7.50 +- in shipping. Thank you all for your concerns about this being a fake but both me and my dad know that this is his helmet.
I have to agree. I find this thread extremely bizarre, because the helmet that was received looks fresh and I have never seen another Vietnam combat used helmet cover in that sort of mint condition. To be honest, it looks nothing like an original Vietnam graffiti cover, it simply looks like some type of re-creation of the helmet in the photo. Also, it is clearly not the same as in the photo, the thumb and details are not even close.
I think you need to show us more detailed photos of the helmet, inside and out. I wish I could say I feel it was the same helmet, but it just doesn't add up or make any sense, sorry. I feel like someone is playing a very weird joke here.
