If you have a dremmel with a fine round diamond head
You can line up the punch mark and dril straight

This did cross my mind!
I'll be squaring off the tops with an endmill which should giive me a good surface to work with but if that fails thanks for the tip.

Even if you can just square up a small center it will be enough.

Got a chance to clamp the action in the drill press today and touch up the studs with an endmill.

Should be able to get a center off this.

Even if you take most of it out like that and then heat and worm it out...

I was thinking of doing that but this endmill is the proper drill size for 4Ba,
If my setup is crooked in either direction I'll knick the threads.

I'll keep that as plan B if this fails.

You are making a mountain out of a molehill here.......... We had these screws shear all of the time as well as most(?) other screws on most other equipment we had in service. Every old car owner too has encountered them all the time too. Centre drill, drill through - at least it's not a blind hole - heat up and screw (or worm) out. It really is THAT simple!
