Old rubber items can be restored with the right chemicals. There are vids about this on YT. I've used Simple Green degreaser and a soak in that for a few days does a great job on most rubbers and plastics, but the long term effect is unknown to me so would not use on anything irreplaceable.
Ah, yes....., No5 rifle bayonets. There were some bayonets that would not fit onto rifles and there was an EMER issued that gave the dimensions of a suitable plug that should fit into the ring-piece - if you'll excuse the phrase - to ensure that they would fit the rifles. If not, ypu were permitted to file the inside of the ring to clear the plug and it's fit the rifle. Never had a problem with fitting the little L2 SMG's. We also had a cut-off, white painted set of bayonets in the inspection bay that were used to test fit onto weapons. I kept one for years marked WKSP TEST-FIT engraved into the cut off blade.
Next time I sift through my old EMER's I'll quote the reference number
So if you;ve got a N4 that doesn't fit the flash eliminator, just open it up and tell the know-all next to you that the EMER authorised it!
