Patrick, that is one of the errors in Mr Stratton's book. Skennerton is more clear on it (in his book, The US Enfield). The Mk1 rifles were not up-graded to Mk1* standard. The * modifications were incorporated in the manufacturing process some time after the first 70000 rifles from each manufacturer. Mk1 and Mk1* rifles would have served side by side. The P14 was only ever envisaged as a stop-gap, so it wasn't too much of an issue.
