"Counter-question: Are you aware that "unstarred" i.e. unmodified P14 Mk Is are considered to be very rare?"

"An interesting point Patrick, can you explain this further for us?"

    Certainly!

    Stratton, "The Pattern 1914 and U.S. Model 1917 Rifles", P. 8:

"P14 MkI rifles are relatively scarce, as few were made and most were converted to MkI* configuration. MkI rifles in original condition will fetch a several-foldpremium over MkI* rifles."

Patrick, that is one of the errors in Mr Stratton's book. Skennertonicon is more clear on it (in his book, The US Enfield). The Mk1 rifles were not up-graded to Mk1* standard. The * modifications were incorporated in the manufacturing process some time after the first 70000 rifles from each manufacturer. Mk1 and Mk1* rifles would have served side by side. The P14 was only ever envisaged as a stop-gap, so it wasn't too much of an issue.
