Garand Bolt issue

I have a Springfield M1 Garand. When I pull the operating rod back, the bolt moves fully back but the bolt does not stay fully back. Instead it moves forward a little when the operating rod is released. Is something broken or out of adjustment?
Any help appreciated.

Does it lock to the rear or not? Does it go all the way back and then forward just a few mm and lock? Or does it come up against the internal parts to stop from closing?? Maybe a pic when open will give us an idea, from the top, close up...

Did it work before you started having this problem? If so you could have a problem with your clip latch and/or op rod catch.

I now recall you have a deactivated M1, the parts used in it may be cast-offs or out-of-spec, regardless someone will have a solution.

The bolt goes all the way back and then forward nearly half way over the follower.
Sarge1998, this is a different Garand from that mentioned on my other post. Has always been like this since I bought it.
Will get a photo on soon.

OK but is it dewat? Regardless, parts are out of spec and the catch is not engaging. Otherwise, it's just hanging up on the follower...maybe stripped detailed pics...more than just the bolt.

I have just partially stripped the Garand and the problem is very obvious. The 2 lugs on the operating rod that engage onto the operating rod catch are damaged/severely worn so the rod won't engage on the catch. Will have to try and source a new rod here in the UK although I think this might be difficult. Thanks for everyone's help.

No, the op rod catch assembly hooks the op rod when the clip is ejected...look at your rifle....

Jim, I see what you mean. Assuming this rifle is also a dewat (he hasn't answered that question that I'm aware of), would it hurt to file or grind the op rod lugs ( catch point) so they will hold the bolt open fully? Just seems awfully expensive to obtain a better op rod for a display type rifle, I feel he wants it to at least function which is why he sought assistance.

I don't know if that would work...maybe they could be built up with weld though. IF it's a dewat...then re-shaped.
