I just got my latest copy of the journal. I find it interesting and disturbing that the board decided for itself it was going to reduce its number for 2010 and then hand pick the ones it "nominates" to stay. This sounds like a bit of a coup, and not very democratic. I don't think the board should or can make this decision w/o consent of the members. What do other members think?
By laws were printed and voted on in the Winter 2006 GCA Journal. Did you read them and vote on them? No one "decided for itself it was going to reduce its number for 2010," the by laws state that the Board "shall be comprised of no less that 7 nor more than 13 members." There are 12 candidates for 9 positions and a nominating committee, per the by laws, endorsed nine they felt were the best choices of the 12 (per the bylaws).Quote:

The GCA, being spread out all over the country, is not like a local organization where you would know all the canidates and there track records. I believe those on the Nominating Committee are in the best position to determine canidates best suited to lead this Association. Most of the membership know very few, if any, of the Board members personally and must rely on the Nominating Committees judgement. Without them making a recommendation most of us would be left to the flip of a coin to determine which canidate to vote for.
As far as the reduction of Board Members from 13 to 9, that was brought to the attention of the membership in the "Chairman's Column" of the Summer 2009 edition of the GCA Journal so, if you read your Journal, it should not have come as a surprise. And as previously stated, this is a non-issue as it is well within our BYLAWS.
I'm lucky to have one of the board members as a personal friend, one who's opinion I can trust. Since I don't really know any of the other candidates at all ( know one a little bit), I can ask my buddy for advice. We are pretty like minded when it comes to the GCA.

I know none of the candidates, so I have no bias one way or the other. The bylaws set forth the board size and there are rules to govern the elections.
But, I won't ever know anything about the election or the candidates, because I miss the fall issue each year (the last three, including this new issue) because when I renew my membership, it never goes through until after the issue has been sent out, so I don't get it. This year I renewed in August and still no issue. :help:
No one at GCA will read this anyway, since they are all in preparation for the convention in Anniston and the opening of the cases of returned rifles for the select few to chose their newest acquisitions. The leftovers will be what the rest of us get when we order or go there.

Also, as you know, the convention was limited to 250 people. This limit was imposed by CMP not the GCA, do to the limited amount of space at CMP Anniston. All of us had an equal opportunity to respond in time to be one of the "select few". I also was late responding. I did not respond untill the convention became a topic of conversation on the CMP Forum. I was still able to get in under the wire.
As far as "opening cases of returned rifles for the select few to choose their newest acquistions". I think not. Most of the GCA members attending will be more interested in observing these returned rifles for historical purposes and not to add to their collections. Also, if by chance, a rifle out of the norm turns up it will go to auction, not to one of the select few.
Be advised that next year the GCA Convention will be held an Springfield Armory. If you wish to attend that one be sure to make your intentions known ASAP.

John F. - Reason I mentioned Springfield Armory as the sight of the 2010 convention is that at the 2005 convention, which was held at SA, the GCA "set a policy to return to Springfield Armory every five years for our convention". You will find that bit of information in the last paragraph on page 4 of the Winter 2005 edition of the GCA Journal.
There may now be other problems with having the convention at SA that I was not aware of. Sorry if I jumped the gun.
By "making your intentions known ASAP" I meant that when the convention is announced by the GCA you had better respond ASAP if you wish to attend. Joe
What about those members who joined after the Winter 2006 Journal was sent out? How do they find out what the Bylaws are? The GCA does not post the Bylaws on the website, nor do they provide new members with a copy of them when they join the GCA. Does a new member have to buy a copy of the Winter 2006 Journal to find out what the Bylaws are?Quote:

This thread seems to be getting a little too personal and edgy at times, so I'd like to respectfully request that everyone involved here take a step back from getting too "heavy" in posting about the issue.

I am pretty sure if another National organization such as the N.R.A. or The Carbine Collectors Asso. wished to hold a convention at CMP they would be accommodated, but we will not know unless they ask.

There's nothing "going on." In most cases, the candidate recommended by the Nominating Committee has a particular skill or asset that will be valuable in the next four years. For example, GCA wants to strengthen and improve the web site ... if you read Bill Ricca's bio, you will see that, among other qualifications, he is particularly strong on web sites. GCA also wants to strengthen Journal coverage of shooting in response to a big increase in members who are most interested in that part of the hobby. Andrew Hall is an avid shooter, smart, and a tireless worker, as we saw first hand when we examined all those M1C's at CMP. A great deal of work and thought went into the recommendations, we should thank the Committee.
2ballcane, you need to do some homework before you take this one on. After you get up to speed, I will be glad to talk to you about it. You are OK until you get to the part where you state, "I don't think the board can do this without the consent of the members." When you educate yourself, call the GCA office, leave your phone number and I will give you a call if you like.
BTW, are you an NRA member??????? That might help.

I believe what was asked concerned the wisdom of letting groups go through cases of rifles and select ones for purchase. That smacks of favoritism and that is the one thing that no organization open to the public wants to stand accused of.
I think Orest Michaels is an outstanding administrator of the CMP, but such a convention perhaps never should have been held. The "cherrypicking" that was so rampant some years back is well known. I have talked with some folks there at the time and I saw the cherrypicking wars on the old Jouster forum. Those were brutal and long lasting affairs. People are now bitter enemies as a result and much of the information needed by the less experienced collectors was never discussed as informed posters left the site rather than be accused of various misdeeds. There was even a time when some posters attempted to only discuss collector information by PM's so the general public couldn't access the details of fakes, markings and details. Duff's informational texts help immensely, but there is new information almost daily. Still, there are some who want to keep these new bits to themselves. You can see this if you look around.
The only real way to have this convention is to restrict the sale of these rifles and that's exactly what the CMP doesn't want to do. These rifles need to be moved along into private hands, but some perceptions will be the result of having a convention that allows some to have access while denying it to others.

This event was open to ANY GCA member that wanted to go. Granted,there were a limited number of spaces available but ANYONE could have sent in there reservation and hoped for the best,same as when you send in an order to CMP after a rifle release(like WRA garands,the different brands of carbines etc). And who gives a sh!t if someone spends a day cleaning slimey greasey rifles and gets to pick one out if they like it? Do you honestly think some folks are going to "cherrypick" themselves a nice 3 or four digit serial number,or a gas trap rifle,or an M1C or D,or maybe an original NM rifle? Or better yet,a mint original IHC? You should know by now that anything of interest to collectors that is even remotely "rare" will be auctioned.

But hey, there are something like 1,000 to 1,500 M1Cs repatriated from Greece according to the Summer 2008 Journal. Now, how many of those show up on a CMP auction site... we shall see.
Besides, didn't the volunteer program get cancelled because of "liability issues"? Now we have 200 "volunteers" ... :yikes:
