How were the upper band,stacking swivel band and rear band marked and where? were these parts originaly blued ? I am trying to restore a Rem.03A3 and will be looking for these parts. The current parts in bad shape. Thanks

But SOME Remington front bands (bayonet lug) were parkerized.
The stacking swivel band and the lower band were put together as an assembly. The bands proper will not be marked, the swivels will have an "R" on the back side.
The front band will have an "R" on the right hand side.

I didn't know that some original bands were parked. I've seen some new replacement parts that were parked. It makes sense that some original parts could be parked.
A few years ago I was fortunate and ran across a nice 1903A3 at the first carbine convention in Birmingham, AL.
John Beard and Don W have checked it out and say it's all original. Don disassembled it in detail and checked all the parts. The muzzle is less than 1.
Don said it looked 'unmolested' and he carefully reassembled it and wiped everything down. My son had shot four rounds from it and the sights were very close. Since then it hasn't been shot. (He has another 1903A3 he can shoot that has been through arsenal rebuild with all parts reparked)
There's a round indention next to the acceptance stamp from another bolt action. It looks like it spent most of it's like in a rack somewhere.
I have read where many people ask how an original 1903A3 looked when new, so I have added several detail photos hoping to help.

Gents thanks for the comebacks and info. Very nice rifle and great PIC's. They do help. My ser# is 3859259. My triggerguard is a Rem 03A3 but does not have the enlarged area in front of the trigger. Is mine correct for my rifle? Also my stock cartouche is a boxed FJA and to the left is the cross cannons and undeneath that is a small RA. Is my stock correct? I am trying to restore the old girl and want to make sure I am trying to get the correct parts. Thanks
Your rifle, S/N 3859259, would have all three bands blued. And the lower band and stacking band would be marked "R" on the swivel beside the shank as Emri pointed out. But, contrary to what Emri said, the bayonet band can be marked "R" on either side.Quote:

We loved Vicksburg and thanks for suggesting Vicksburg as a stopover halfway to Birmingham. The little town seemed like it hasn't changed much for a long, long time and retains the culture of the old South.
There's a statue honoring WWI soldiers that was located in the little downtown square. (He's holding a 1903)

There was an old drug store on the old main street shops that had old guns all the way around the store hung on the walls near the ceiling. The owner of the store was an older lady and I asked her about the guns. She said that they had belonged to a previous owner of the store who has passed away. She didn't know anything about them and said they were in the store when she bought it so she left them up as decorations.

The memorial cemetery and battleground are were astounding. The area is beautiful, well maintained, and there's a little road that winds for miles through it. I took too many photos to show here, but this old ironclad they had gotten from the bottom of the Mississippi was one of the most interesting things there to me.

Later in the evening we were driving around looking at all the old buildings etc. I found another old cemetery on the edge of town that was deserted. It was a really run down area of town and there was nobody in the whole cemetery. The mood was really different here and it seemed like you could almost feel ghosts of the soldiers. Most all dates of death were very close.
If anyone who hasn't been to Vicksburg has the chance to visit, it is well worth the trip.

For the interesting post and the pics to go with it!! Did you notice some of the arms pictured on the wall of the establishment might well be NFA items ?? Maybe they are on a C&R list nowdays, I don't keep up with those things much. I haven't been to V'burg for a visit since early 90's when the kids were young and needed to see what it was all about. Was that "ironclad" a newer exhibit? or an ongoing one? I remember a "gunboat" that was more of a restoration than anything else. They had salvaged the iron parts, engines / boilers / etc., but all the wood was new production to "restore it".

If you are ever near the Jackson, MS area; you might visit Clinton, MS just north of there. They have the only "civil war" (yankee term) memorial to the Black people who served the South in arms.

The last time I was there was in the 60's when I was a kid and the Ironclad wasn't there then. It was 'new' to me when I went back three years ago!

Looking through my photos, I just noticed the Ironclad was under restoration a LONG time ago and everything inside is covered with thick dust!

The gunboat Cairo came out of the Yazoo river where it had been sunk by a Confederate torpedo or mine. When it was found it was virtually intact but completely filled with silt. The engineers thought it could be raised by running several large cables under the hull and lifting it, but with the tremendous weight of the silt the cables cut through the hull leaving a jumbled mess. Everything that could be found was loaded on a barge and sent to Pascagoula, Mississippi for salvage and restoration before being returned to Vicksburg.
The silt had preserved many artifacts in the Cairo which are now in the museum at the site of the gunboat.
