For the interesting post and the pics to go with it!! Did you notice some of the arms pictured on the wall of the establishment might well be NFA items ?? Maybe they are on a C&R list nowdays, I don't keep up with those things much. I haven't been to V'burg for a visit since early 90's when the kids were young and needed to see what it was all about. Was that "ironclad" a newer exhibit? or an ongoing one? I remember a "gunboat" that was more of a restoration than anything else. They had salvaged the iron parts, engines / boilers / etc., but all the wood was new production to "restore it".

If you are ever near the Jackson, MS area; you might visit Clinton, MS just north of there. They have the only "civil war" (yankee term) memorial to the Black people who served the South in arms.

Clinton, Mississippi is west of Jackson just off I 20.
Use to know a couple of guys in Vicksburg that were Civil War relic hunters. I went metal detecting with them a few times, and amazing how much is still in the ground around there. They took me to a place called Old Warrenton just south of Vicksburg which was a Union camp ground. They had found over 200 coins in the area, with most being half dimes.

As Johnny Peppers pointed out, Clinton, MS, is west of Jackson and a mere 6 miles from my old hometown. And the town north of Jackson is Canton, MS. It has no "L" in the spelling. You've confused Clinton, MS, with Clanton, AL!

The gunboat Cairo came out of the Yazoo river where it had been sunk by a Confederate torpedo or mine. When it was found it was virtually intact but completely filled with silt. The engineers thought it could be raised by running several large cables under the hull and lifting it, but with the tremendous weight of the silt the cables cut through the hull leaving a jumbled mess. Everything that could be found was loaded on a barge and sent to Pascagoula, Mississippi for salvage and restoration before being returned to Vicksburg.
The silt had preserved many artifacts in the Cairo which are now in the museum at the site of the gunboat.

You seem to know the area quite well. If you haven't been there recently, they are almost done with a new bridge over the Yazoo on Hwy. 61 north of Vicksburg. I travel that way on my way to AR so I don't have to drive through LA. They also have neared completion of a new bridge over the Mississippi river at Greenville. The old steel bridges are about all gone nowdays.

Thanks John for clearing that up! Yes, I AM easily confused !!

I hate trying to help people with directions to get to a destination. I know how to get there, but can't remember the highway numbers or street names to help them because I never pay attention to them. I have to tell them "turn left at the big Baptist church" rather than to turn on CR55 or whatever. And yes, getting town names confused and turned around is easy for me to do.

As usual your memory is excellent. I'm sure you remember more than I have forgotten.

Yes, I noticed some of the arms that were on the walls in that old drug store.

You are completely correct about the Ironclad and I'm sure it was the same one you saw. (Your memory is doing well!)

The last time I was there was in the 60's when I was a kid and the Ironclad wasn't there then. It was 'new' to me when I went back three years ago!
Did all this time pass so quickly? (Your memory is better than mine Emri)



Looking through my photos, I just noticed the Ironclad was under restoration a LONG time ago and everything inside is covered with thick dust!

I thought it was still being restored when I was there, but it looks like it hasn't changed since you were there last!







My young son loved it three years ago anyway!
