I agree 100%. And shellac is a very poor finish for repeated handling in oily/greasy conditions. I suspect the Russians may have used it for quick results - simply painting it on. I cannot imagine that they used the kind of method that was used on 19th century furniture - filling, smoothing, staining, feeding with - yes, you guessed right - a touch of linseed oil to "fire" the figuring of the wood before applying the shellac in a wearisome procedure.
I have done some shellac polishing on antique furniture, and compared with good old BLO, shellac is in the "look, don't touch" category.
