I recently found some blurb on 7.62 conversions which mentioned "The Enfield Rest" and have seen it mentioned in other posts on this forum. It sounds important. Could someone describe it please, and what make it special. (Yes, I am a Novice!.)

I didn't know you wantted those Warren, when we cleared them out of Camp Wainwright in the mid 80s they went to the dump I think. A couple of dozen or so...
We've got two and still use a slightly later variant to test rifles. Every telescope I repair is fired from a slave rifle from an Enfield rest to test it for 'fastness'. The rest removes the human element so you just see the perormance of the rifle. It's quite gratifying when someone comes complaining that the rifle shoots like a pig. Once on the rest, it seems to shoot like a dream and is as accurate as the best. A useful bit of kit

Peter, Thanks again. I read on another forum(not sure if we can post those links here?) that the rest somehow tried to emulate the rifle in use. Does it have springs and shockers, a boney easily bruised shoulder and a "spongy" grip vice for this emulation or is it just rock solid?. It looks heavy. Is it bolted down or mobile?.
This is a partial shot of the Enfield Rest. I just cannot get back far enough for a complete picture. I'm sure it is not the ones tossed at Wainwright, as I believe those were just the aiming rifle stands: a three legged stand with a cradle for the rifle. I got a few of the ones from Wainwright when in Edmonton at the time. This bit of kit weighs around 200 plus pounds .......and is bench mounted. I'll see if I can get a better picture later today as moving some "junque" around "the shed"tm

Makes modern gun rests look positively flimsy. Probably explains I'm a better shot off of a sandbag than with a Lead Sled lol.
Doug: You beat me by about 10 minutes digging one out. Only the top however, as I have a few more squirreled away with the legs...

Correct all, rifle rest aiming is the ones I'm talking about. The big machine rests are scarce. I only saw one. It used to sit in the 25yd range in Work Point Barracks. It was there for years and I'll bet weighed 3 or 400 pounds. Or more. Post 2 eluded to the ones shown in post 8 so I thought that was what you were talking about.

Nice picture, they just seem to go together; to evoke that era when machines like these ("junque") were to be found in "the sheds" outside your back door along with all sorts of other paraphernalia. If only those sheds and barns were still standing!Quote:
