Help Identfying the WWII USGI Rifle Case

Hello,

I walked into the local gunshp today and they had a USGI rifle case they thought I might like (because Im about the only military collector around) that they showed me. It is marked Boyt 1943 and is built very sturdy. It is made of leather and metal. It looks as though it could attach to something (Jeep?) via a mounting bracket on the back side. Its hard to tell in the pictures but there is a rib on three sides similar to the one that is visible in the first photo on the side. I would like any info on it I could get. What is something like this worth if I was to purchase it? Sorry about the quality and quantity of pictures, I took them in the gun shop. Thanks to all.

It's a leather carrying case, Auto rifle M4. For the BAR. No idea as to worth becasue they never crop up around here. I don't think it's meant to attach though.

It seems like, from my reading of this site and your screen name, that you have ian interest in the BAR. Do you have one? Just curious.

Here is the WW1 BAR rifle case, some four inches longer than the 1903 rifle case, this case was re-issued during WW2. There are some BAR websites that list the values on these cases.

I used to collect US military and had virtually all at one time. I've had 3 BARs, Marlin Rockwell, Royal Typewriter, NESA. I think they're great except for the amount of ammo they compell you to go through... I still have an active interest in all these things.

What are the Canadian full auto rules? Do you have to have something like a Class III permit here in the US? I would assume so but you know what they say about assuming...

The full auto collectors ended in 1978 or 79. No full auto collectors since then. If you have them you can have them. You can't shoot them. Same as the converted auto's such as ex full autos changed to fire semi only. All grandfathered. Our laws aren't the same set up as yours. Nothing we can do about it. We're lucky the long gun registry was dropped. Now our 10-22s and Winchester 37's and the like don't have to be registered anymore. The real good days are well behind us. The young these days don't know what they missed.

(All this was spouted without trying to say anything political. And without being too specific.)

Unfortunatly I am in that group of "young" people, though I do know a few guys with Class III permits and I shoot them in a semi-regular basis.

Sorry, I mean the young here in Canada. In the US you can still become a full auto or supressed collector providing your state allows it. If you don't like the rules, relocate by a few hundred miles or less. We have one set of rules.

I do agree that I probably missed out in alot because I am Young. It seems very weird to think that until the late 60's (in the US) one could own a full auto and the only requirement was having cash. For the time being I will just have to be happy with my AK and my slide fire stock. The differences in rules from country to country is interesting though. Thanks for all of the info.

Those BAR cases were mounted in ½ tracks. I’ve never heard of any other use. While I have never had a use for one, I bought one 25 yrs ago just for the hell of it. I also have the leather scabbards for the Carbine, Garand and Thompson. Some day I might stumble over the leather scabbard for the M1903 rifle – Hopefully! I’m also a BAR man in as much as that I have 2 1918A2s. Both are Korean War mfg. Here’s a photo.

WRONG!!! You should research your subjekt more thouroughly! Your statement would have been correkt IF you had said the early 30s, but from 1933 on with the passage of the Nat'l Firearms Act ALL operable full autos had to be registered and any transfer requires the payment iof a $200 transferr tax. In 1968 the law was changed to also require the registration of dewat/unserviceable FAs altho there is no transfer tax on these weapons.

Really though a $200 dollar tax is not bad on a rifle like those two BAR's you have. Im sure they are worth about $20,000 each so a $200 tax stamp is a drop in the bucket. Thats only a 1% tax which is much lower than the local sales tax in my home town which is now at 7.5%. Nice FA's you have there.

I'd love to pay $200 to be able to register a full auto...it's so simple.

Mdrim13---- IF you can pass the extensive background check and IF you can afford to by it most select fire or full autos start around 7 large (thousand) and go up from there and IF you can afford to feed the old girl you pay your $250 for the tax stamp and it's yours. That's the federal law. It also applies to SBR's (short barreled rifles- barrels under 16"), suppressors, and sawed off shotguns. You can own them but they sure want to know where you and the items in question are. The only state laws you may have to worry about would be the Peoples Republic of Californistan, NY, NJ, ILL, Mass. All places I try to avoid these days.
