Just wondering how many of you guys know about this modified Lee Enfield. I saw one at the museum after I first learned of its existence. This one is for sale - it wont be cheap! There was also a semi-automatic SMLE which I only just found out.

And what is the story behind the sad remains of the F88 / AUG under the Kiwi Charlton? Ditto the "cooked" looking Minimi receiver.
Re the photo too...... I have seen a couple of those L1A1's with a pistol grip screwed through the bottom of the handguards. Someone tell me that it's not just a screw....., please! There MUST be more to it than that. The first round and recoil moments would surely just tear the grip away

I am fortunate to own two original Charltons, although they are both incomplete, and my research has shown that there are no more than 14 worldwide. Although they were essentially handmade, there was a definite production design which is clearly illustrated in the first photo of the Waiouru collection shown above. The give-away is the shape and angle of the pistol grip which should be straight and angled rearward. Any that are not straight, or angled forward, are modern made replicas which are based on the original drawings, copies of which are fairly common in NZ. Only 1800 NZ Charltons were made and almost all of them were destroyed in a fire at a storage facility just after the war. They were only ever issued to the Home Guard and they were not to be used in full-auto mode except in extreme emergency (like you are the only Guardsman facing a Japanese invasion force and they are 20 yards away!). I knew a WW2 Armourer who had the job of acceptance testing of them in WW2 and he said the friction brake (the cylindrical device on the right rear of the action) would fail in full-auto fire and the gun would speed up until the bolt head fractured. Charlton took his design to Australia during the war and the much neater version made by the Electrolux factory in Melbourne in pictured in the Waiouru photos. Only four or five of these exist and they were never put into full production. I have a partially modified Lithgow SMLE body that was recovered from the old Electrolux factory many years ago. The NZ Charltons used purpose-built Bren type magazines that were made in Australia but they were slightly oversize where they fitted the action and had to be file fitted which caused a weakness in the feed lips. These original mags are very rare but I am fortunate to have an example. Any Charlton magazine which is modified from a Bren mag is a replica. After the problems with the contract magazines was discovered, the Charltons were issued just with their standard 10 rd MLE mags. The NZ made MP38 shown in the Waiouru photos was made by an RNZAF Armourer (Beale) and was milled and turned from solid metal. It is beautifully made and is a one-off. In addition to Sten production in NZ during WW2, Allen Mitchell of Wanganui also developed a submachine gun of which four prototypes were made. I was able to handle and examine one at Waiouru Museum in 1993.

Peter, the NZSAS modified L1A1's have the forward pistol grip screwed to a steel plate inside the fore-end, not directly to the handguards!

Just as a matter of interest, has anyone ever made a non working replica of one of these MG/rifles. Just for show or as part of a collection. Good to see if you have. Or better still (or worst still, depending on your engineering point of view!), what about a WORKING replica?
Peter, it would be fair to say that there are more replicas than originals. Copies of the original patent drawings have been available here for 40 years to my knowledge. All of the replicas however, suffer the same fault in that they are made to the drawings which are not the same as the production models. These differences are largely cosmetic and the shape of the rear grip is the give-away. The drawings show the grip as leaning forward at the bottom (a la Boys A/T rifle) and of an odd shape, but the production guns had a rearward leaning grip that was straight. Most of the replicas are semi-auto only to avoid Police complications, and many do not function at all. Gun City Ltd of Christchurch had a replica for sale but I am not sure if it is still on their website. I will post some pictures of one of my originals that I am rebuilding (in the distant future!).Quote:

To be really honest Rod, when you mentioned some while back on the forum - or via Bill M - that you were going to build a Charlton I really didn't expect you to finally do it. So it's good to see the skills that went into it. As a matter of interest, which Charlton did you base/copy it from as there were several small variations, albeit sometimes small and minor, sometimes a bit more obvious. My boss at the big Northern District Ord Depot mentioned that he had fired their example for a NZTV semi documentary about NZ war output but it struggled a bit and it'd only reliably feed and fire with two particular Bren mags. I think that ones now at Waiouru but someone told me recently that that one went to the museum where Charlton hailed from.

Peter, what you see is the amalagamated remains (plus the small parts previously mentioned) of two standard production Charltons fitted to a correct period MLE barrelled action that I machined to original specs. The main working parts were from gun number 1917 and that is now the number of mine. The magazines were never Bren mags (although the prototype mag was modified from one). The Charlton mags were made in Australia by a Bren mag manufacturer (Electrolux?) on a unique set of tooling, and they will not fit a Bren gun. These magazines (which are probably rarer than the guns) have no markings on them. As delivered from Australia, the magazines did not fit the Charltons and the guns were originally shipped with 10 rd rifle mags. The new magazines had to have minor alterations before they would fit properly and then they were sent out to be retrofitted to the guns. My magazine is one of these altered original mags.Quote:

Congratulations on completing your gun. Close to 40 years ago, I obtained a copy of the Charlton patent from the NZ Ministry of Justice. Several years ago, I obtained copies of three large sheets of dimensioned drawings. All dimensions in common fractions, not decimals. Have been working on a repro off and on, ever since. Will not be selective of course. Best I can hope for is semi only if I am lucky, or straight pull bolt action by default. There are certainly a lot of parts to be scratch built.
Does the 2nd "toy" mean that at some stage in the future there may be another original charlton resurrected?
Definitely not! I doubt that there are any original parts left for me to find in NZ, and I doubt that I will be around in another 30 years that it took to gather up the last lot of parts! You aren't kidding. Lots of parts to make. So far, I have altered the receiver, made the gas and recoil spring systems, the muzzle unit (used a salvaged P'14 sight), the receiver extension. Cam plate is installed, and tracks in the groove in the receiver extension. Next will be making the cam block on the bolt, and fitting it to the cam plate. I'll then know if the thing has a chance of operating, at least manually.Quote:

Speaking of which, I wonder where the NZBC film/programme about the NZ war production went or whether it still exists in some dusty old archive. That will show one being fired. It also showed the crates of brand new unopened No4's that were stored in the big sheds that backed onto the railway sidings. Alas, when they did open the crates the rifles were just rotted out rust heaps as they'd come over as deck cargo. According to my boss, it was filmed in '65 or so, before I went there

In 1969 I was working for W H Tisdall Ltd, Christchurch, as a gunsmith and firearms salesman. We had dozens of cases of brand-new Long Branch No 4's that had come from Army Stores. Ten rifles per case, and they had been stamped N^Z on the butts then repacked, and all in brand-new, rust-free condition. They were all two-groove barrels and L rear sights. They sold for NZ$29.95 each or $35.00 sporterised. I took a case home every Friday night and bought them back on monday, sporterised for $3.50 each. As my weekly take-hime pay was only $55, the extra $35 (tax-free) was a significant boost for a young married man. Sporterisation consisted of cutting the fore-end at the middle band and rounding off, fitting a new forward sling swivel, removal of handguards and retaining ring, cutting off the bayonet lug portion of the barrel, squaring off and recrowning. I did them on a production-line basis and could do the 10 rifles in about 4 hours.Quote:

I think i understand how the electrolux semi auto only works but have no idea how the original version drops the sear in full auto.

First time I made an AR barrel from a blank, I was unsure about the correct diameter of the gas port. Gas port sizes vary with barrel length and barrel diameter. I drilled an undersized hole, and went to the range with a battery operated electric drill and a set of numbered drills. Initially, the action would not open enough to eject and feed. I kept increasing the port diameter step by step until fired cases were reliably ejected, rounds fed, and the action would lock open on an empty magazine.
The Charlton gas system is interesting and a bit different. The piston does not extent all the way to the gas block/gas port. The pistol is relatively short, and there is a tube which brings gas back to the pistol face. I suspect that this affects the dwell time. The M-1 Garand system, for example, delivers a sharp impulse to the piston; the Charlton's would be softer.
A Charlton is a lot heavier than a rifle - this would also be a factor in the amount of perceived recoil.

I have tried to upload the video from yesterday's test firing. You can see how stable the rifle is during firing. This is obviously due to the extra weight, the efficient muzzle brake, and the soft gas system. I will open out the gas port shortly and go back to the range this afternoon.

No, because it is select-fire. As a manufacturing dealer I am allowed to test-fire only. When it is finished it will be transferred to my collector's ticket and then not be legally allowed to be fired (even though it will be fully capable). A collector's licence in NZ allows pistols and 'Restricted Weapons' (MG's, mortars, etc) to be securely held but not fired with live ammo (blanks for organised re-enactment, theatrical events, etc. is OK). Restricted Weapons have to be stored with a vital part removed and stored separately.Quote:

My guns do get used for Army demos, pre-deployment foreign weapons familiarisation courses, etc. so there is little chance of cobwebs building up! A good result yesterday on the goat cull - 60 goats and a pig. The run holder is happy and we will get other chances to hunt his 33,000 acre property. We drove up to about 2,000 feet and foot hunted to around the 3,000 foot level for 6 hours. Back onto the Charlton today!

While we're here I should imagine that you could never production-line the conversion of the rifles to Charltons simply due to the widely varying body machine and wear tolerances. I remember during the late 70/early 80's or so when lots of school Cadet Corps had No1 rifles that'd been DP'd to...., well, whatever spec it was, it wasn't recognised by anyone. So they had to devise a spec based on that and very similar to the L59 DP No4 rifle. It became very complicated because there were so many variables with the external body dimensions. Just to devise the body and barrel jigs for the machine tables to securely to mill the bodies and barrels became so complicated. Eventually they abandoned the idea and just issued DP No4's on a one-for-one basis and scrapped the old worn out No1's

The operating rod/gas piston extends quite a ways toward the rear of the receiver extension. A buffer assembly is mounted on the receiver extension. This should get the bolt stopped or dramatically slowed down before the bolthead slams into the locking abutment.
Then again, I'm assuming that this is what happens - haven't made the buffer assembly for mine yet.
Yes, there is a stop at the rear right of the action to arrest the travel of the piston/scroll plate. It does not cushion the impact but has an aluminium sleeve that acts as a 'dead blow' to counteract bounce. The bolt has about 2mm longtitudinal clearance in the cam slot and is able to travel this distance when the piston stops. The hinged plate at the rear of the action has a stop pin which abuts on the stump of the bolt handle, and when correctly fitted, stops the free movement of the bolt before the bolt head strikes the body wall. By careful fitting of both stops I was able to get the bolt back enough to still give 0.5mm clearance on the bolt head. As Peter has noted, these beasts are all individually hand-fitted to give 'reliable' operation. The following quote is direct from the original handbook; "This weapon should be employed as self-loading rifle capable of firing 30 or more aimed shots per minute, and also, in emergency, of firing automatic and thus providing a reserve of fire power within the unit." The handbook also reccomends to not use the fore grip at all but to fire from the prone position as per the Bren and Lewis guns with the left hand on the small of the stock, and for hip shooting to hold the left leg of the bipod which counteracts the tendency of the gun to pull to right.Quote:

When set on full-auto the first shot is fine but the auto-sear is tripping just a tad too soon and the firing pin fall is just contacting the safety cam causing misfires. Not a big deal to fix. The gun is very pleasant to shoot in semi-auto. I have bored the gas port to 3.75mm, set the adjustable gas tube to the middle setting, and set the return spring on the lightest setting. I am happy to explain these methods of adjustment that are built into gun if anyone wants to know. Anyway, enjoy the video (my apologies for the quality but I ain't Cecil B DeMille).

Yep....., pretty damned good I'd say too! I would say that your project there and perseverance has just reinforced my belief that NZers have an inborn '....we can fix it' attitude to life. Especially those who remember the pre 70's era of 'overseas funds' and everything done in-house. My girlfriends dad was a share farmer - and a wealthy one too - and he had the same attitude on his farm too. He could fix anything.........
