a new Lithgow

A friend gave me this today for doing some work for him. I am really falling in love with the Enfields all over again. They seem to be breeding on me. So anyway here are a couple of pics of the new girl, whatcha think? Anyone know what the SY stamp is by the safety? I haven't even wiped it down yet, the mag is soaking in some mineral spirits. It is so gummed up I couldn't pull the bolt back without removing the mag.

I like it a lot Eric. Very nice looking lithgow and issued to my home state of Qld as well.

how could you tell Queensland? I am trying to learn as much as I could about it.

I see that over on the FES forum its been put forward that the 1 stamp denote its a 1st class arm.
I have a 1918 Lithgow that has a 4 stamped there, is mine a 4th class arm??

If your rifle is stamped in a similar way, the 4th Military District was South Australian issue.

A 4th class arm, reckon that would be well and truly ZF'ed.

I will admit 5th, I had a bit of a quiet smile when I read that, in a way it's good not having to put up with that rubbish, but a pity that it is being diseminated at all.
Come to think of it, he used to proudly spruik about his English heritage, so us Australasian cousins can't really be held responsible for the misinformation.(we will just throw it back onto PL.):madsmile:

You guys want a real laugh, google his handle and you'll find he's got tens of thousands of posts on dozens of forums from musical instruments to wood carving. photography lots of firearms forums... you might even find where he has been banned from two, and that he only had a licence and a Lee Enfield ten minutes before he became god of the FES :lol:

& Then 3 minutes later i had my first "run-in" with him & me with only many years of experience at the time, man! do i feel like a fool :(

Eta, still cant believe they sacrificed about 100 years of combined knowledge/experience for just on 5 years worth, they were told but would not listen, their loss, i see the forum is lucky to have a dozen active threads a week these days.

I dont know the rarity of 1930s dated Lithgows vs the others but in my years of collecting i have seen more '30s dated Lithgows than any other, this is only what i have personally seen & it may well be the other way round for some but it would seem to me, even though '30s Lithgows are rare they seem common compared to other makers, same applies to 1920s dated SMLEs bar the MkVs.

Pongos comments further on seem completely legitimate to me.

He just thinks the other factories carried on production at the same ratio as to Lithgow as during WW1, there is nothing wrong with Pongos comment, i would call it spot on, the Turkey is just jumping on Pongos comment as it does not completely agree with his comment, same Bat Gauno, same Bat channel!

I may be being a little rough on him, you have to keep in mind he only got his licence back in 2007 :move eek: it took me a few years to start putting 2 & 2 together up coming up with 9 :cheers: which was a lot better than 47 :confused:, i think i now have it down to 5.2 .:dancingbanana::clap:

I could never get the meaning of the term "bat s**t crazy" before, but every morning this week I've got out to my car only to find that the visiting fruit bats have used it as a bombing range over night - orange guano everywhere so I'm beginning to understand...

The FES does seem to be getting less traffic these days.

I have seen the forum down to as little as 3 active posts over 7 days (you can set it to show just the last 7 days) at the moment there are 14 active posts, 11 of these are from Saturday till Monday, so a busy weekend.

The FES is a forum with an Aussie mod whose knowledge of Lithgows can be printed on the pointy end of a pin. He bans any one who corrects him or dares to show any knowledge that will take the spotlight of him as the GURU. He knows more than serving armourers and retired armoureres, enough said.

I grew up watching him on TV along with all the others (like most here i suppose) hope he's innocent but this will destroy his reputation.
I believe there were some paintings of his done here in Wanganui in the tunnel leading to the Durie Hill Elevator, all long been vandalized & painted over, there were a couple-a-three left in the late seventies so got to see them.

Can I suggest that if you are not Australian then you wipe this thread from your mind. I lived there for almost 3 years, in very close proximity to the most straight talking of them. And I can't understand it either - except that it's wandered a bit.......... Maybe the moderators ought to be a little concerned about this bit of the thread following forthcoming litigious events in Manchester recently. I'll leave it at that...........

Thanks for the responses everyone. I got called back to work offshore the day after I got it. It is killing me not being able to clean her up and bring her back to her former glory. The one thing that did interest me though is that there are no import marks and no proof firing stamp(the 18+ tons) is this normal not to have a firing proof?

I don't think it's too far off its former glory now so when you do clean it go gently on the stock. Color and finish looks perfect to me as it is and applying any type of cleaner will ruin it. So many times I've seen the regretful comments by individuals who cleaned the original finish off their lithgow and wanted to know how to bring it back. Also if you are not already aware, the correct procedure to dismantle is forend must come off first, then the butt. Avoid removing anything that is not necessary to remove, like butt plate and sights.
