Hi all.
I recently became the owner of a Springfield M1903, 8xx,xxx which I gather puts the manufacture date in 1918. The barrel is SA stamped 10-30 and it has a C stock.
Can anyone give me a sense of when this barrel was manufactured and whether or not the stock was substituted as part of some re-arsenal process?
So...the barrel was made in 10 of 30...and the original stock would have been the straight grip...now, that could have been altered anywhere along it's journey to you by anyone that had it...not necessarily an arsenal.
But it is also possible that it was an arsenal rebuild. This is what it says in "The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and its Variations" by Joe Poyer: "The Type 6 C Stock was aproved on March 1928. From 1928 through 1939 most C stocks appear to have been installed only on some service rifles submitted for a complete rebuild."Quote:

I've been wanting to add one to the collection but was deliberating if the premium over a modern rebuild was worth it as I like to shoot my MILSURPs.

Keep in mind that Joe Poyer's "Type" designations have to basis in military use and are a convenience only. Your rifle was overhauled, probably more than once. The original barrel would have been made sometime in 1918.
You can post a couple of more digits of your serial number without having any security problems.
The first three are 873 - I appreciate the help. If nothing else, I'm getting quite the history lesson as I browse the forums and exercise my Google-fu.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get these photos up but I can relay this - the only marks I can find on the stock are a stamp near the rear sling loop 'D1836' and under the mag cutoff, an S above a 9. On the top of the bolt handle are a 2 and a 7 but they are inverted from one another. On the bolt behind the extractor are a w and a 5. I have not yet attempted to see what it's like with the stock removed.

D1836 is the drawing number and correct for a Type 6 C Stock.
Small world. I have 873,388. It was a Marine Corps rifle and is a SRS hit to 1938 in San Diego. There were quite a few Marine rifles in the 873 range. If you want post your serial and I will check it for you.
Love the stock by the way. I would like to own that one myself. :)

The stock of the rifle for the OP is a pre-war Type C (not Type 6!) stock and is a replacement. The bolt dates from about 1919 and is also a replacement.
Still, I have a thing for the rifles with a type C stock and would love to have it just for a shooter if nothing else. They must shoot great with that stock.

anyway,
the rifle has been rebuilt, has a mix of parts,. bolt and cut off are from a Mark 1 springfield, stock could have been added by a collector shooter, rather then the military, it was made after 1935, drawing numbers were used on some NM and replacement parts after 1935..
Anyway, Type 6 - "C" Stock is how this type of stock is called by Joe Poyer in his book. I didn't want to disinform the original poster and wasn't aware the book was wrong. Why ever did I buy it?

The "Type" designation is used by Joe Poyer and Jesse Harrison and I understand their reasoning. However, when you say "Type 6", either we don't know what you're talking about or have to scramble around to find what that is. Say "...a pre-war Type C stock". Then you know what you're talking about.

Just got some more pics for the same rifle...from paleofit...
So it's looking like a shooter made from between the Wars parts, likely originally destined for the Marines?
Well it has the Marine #10 sights. The Marine Depot at Philly manufactured their own sights to put on the 1903's and this one has a set. Now they do repo these now and side by side they are hard to tell different from the originals. All the originals I've seen look like they were mostly handmade as there is just slight differences in them. This rifle also has a hatcher hole.
There are a few things that look like they might have been changed to me, but I do think at one time it was a Marine rifle, especially with that range in the SRS. That is usually the biggest tale as they usually group together and you look for other traits to confirm it.
It would be nice if it had more traits so you could say 100%. And it very well might and we just don't have pics to be able to tell. But it certainly has more chances of one time being Marine than not.

The front sight blade mics at 0.10 thick and the exposed height is 0.311 if I measured correctly.
Given that it's an 1918 receiver with a 1919 bolt, is it possible that they could have been assembled together?
At this point, the serial, sights, Hatcher hole, lack of cartouches on the stock all could support the possibility of an ex-Marine (my Marine buddies would claim there's no such thing). Would a Marine armorer had access to an A1 cutoff if necessary to make a replacement?
Is there anything else I can look for?
