Americian rifles in the UK. M1 Garand (make is Beretta), M1 Carbine (make is Inland Div) & M14 (make is LDT) .

The Garand came supplied with the dark wood in the bottom picture found the light coloured tiger stripe so changed it I think it stands out from the others.
I always preferred the look of the wood handguard...and no hinged buttplate on the M14...
The early M14 (T44) stock with the M1 rifle butt plate is becoming very difficult to find. The original wood hand guard is even more difficult to find and "paper thin" at the rear, most have small cracks too. I used the plastic short lived slotted hand guard for the M1A1 in this photo, stock is the T44 and barrel is dated SA 1-60

As deacts they are not cheap, which is what I assume they are because the cost of straight-pulls is such that most of my friends just have one of the above, or an SLR.
Now thot's a nice, tidy collection.

Why are straight-pulls so expensive in the UK? Semiautos (not legal in UK) are not nearly as expensive here in mainland Europe as the straight-pulls in the UK. The conversion is not that expensive...who are scoring the premium??

You have hit the nail on the head with the word "conversion" - conversions are not allowed. The rule is: "Once a Section 5 (Prohibited Weapon), always a Section 5." So they have to be bulit from the ground up with a mixture of second hand and new parts, the latter mainly being a non-ported barrel.Quote:

While the UK gun laws on semi-autos are difficult, the Americans laws regards Deacts is very bad. In the US you cannot have a de-act like in much of Europe. So if you go to a reenactment you see mock up solid aluminum models/propane/new made blank guns, whereas in the UK and many other European countries you can have a deactivated Bren, MG42, MP44, MP40, Sten, Thompson, mortar, etc. True they will not shoot, but in the UK you can have very nice collection of original class II weapons/destructive devices on a middle class income, buy and trade such items with relatively little impediment. You simply cannot do that in the US of A.
Yes in the US we can have full autos, if you can afford them and are willing to go through the difficult permitting process. Unless you live in a bad county or state where they are not allowed. Frankly until you have seen the vehicle meets in Europe and the items they have you have no idea what we are missing by our stupid laws.

The receiver was made the Italian company Breda Meccanica Romana (BMR) using Winchester tooling for the Danes, but never exported and 'rediscovered' recently in storage in Sicily. Nuova Jager Italia assembled these with other parts to comply to the UK's firearm laws. It has an interesting mix of new (the barrel), Italian and US parts including a bolt stamped D28287-I2SA S-06<> which makes it Aug 1943.
The only thing I don't like is that Nuova Jager stamped their name rather garishly (and badly - a double stamp, unless they're all like this) on the RHS of the receiver, I've dulled it down with grey acrylic paint (which will come off if necessary) but it was a shame to mark it. The action is very easy, no extraction issues at all. All ammo used is home loaded, mostly new Privi (PPU) cases - though I've used others OK. 147gn heads, 47.5gn of N140. Only shot out to 200yds so far and the rifle is very, very accurate, superb balance and sight picture.
Very nice looking rifle...very nice.

Collectors felt the same way about the Lend Lease guns imported by Interarms back in the day: beautiful rifles ruined by the Brit proofs. Most shunned them entirely, but some rebarreled them even though they were mint. Same with the band of red paint, a buyer couldn't wait to scrub it off. They sold at a significant discount to non-proofed guns in much worse condition. If I had been smarter I could have filled my cellar with cheap, mint, pre-war M1s :(
So maybe yours will someday be called a variation and bring a premium:) That's what happened with the LLs.

To a purist back then, any non-standard mark was anathema. Nobody at that time (except me and maybe 3 or 4 others) collected Garands per se, everybody collected US Military and only needed M1s as part of that field. The Brit proofs said they were not used by the US military, kind of disqualifying them.
Actually, the first 80 M1s were made in 1934-35 and mass production started with #81 in 1937. The war in China might as well have been on Mars as far as the US was concerned. Even the outbreak in Europe in 1939 was remote... in the words of the national hero Charles Lindbergh and The America First Party, "Just one of those age-old conflicts in Europe that doesn't concern us." The whole rationale behind the very controversial Lend Lease Act was a back-door way around our popular neutrality.
Oh, I see: "pre-war." For us, anything before December 7, 1941 is pre-war.
