Re-finishing a Ljungman AG-42B

I have had this rifle for a very long time, it was purchased from a left handed friend who had gotten it for deer hunting. Since this rifle is not left or right hand specific he thought it would be a good choice, but after one season of "lugging" this rifle through the woods and dealing with the extremely loud chambering noise, he decided to buy a left handed Browning A-bolt in .30-06.

He was more than happy to pass this rifle on to me for $100 with a box of CIL Imperial 6.5x55mm ammunition.

For my next small busy project I will disassemble and strip the non-original varnished finish from this AG42 and re-apply a BLO coating.

This will be a series of photos that will show teardown and cleaning. This rifle has not been stripped or properly cleaned in at least 15 years since I have had it.

In fact I have only put 30 rounds through it since I have owned it, and only had the bore pulled through afterwards.

Don't misplace the mag, they're extremely hard to find in these parts.

Polishing some of the shiny bits and details of the heat treatment to the hammer.

I even found the original sling in a box of firearms parts I had.

It was fairly dry so I greased it with some Dubbin.

Work on the stock was stubborn, the varnish and stain took a number applications of stripper to soften and scrub with 0000 steel wool.

Household bleach was used to lighten the wood to help wash out the wood stain.

Rising with methyl alcohol dried the stock rapidly.

As expected the stock was very thirsty soaking up a a large amount of oil.

First it was applied with a lint free cloth in several light coats and allowed to dry.

Lastly it was brushed over with a heavy full coat paying special attention to the interior channels grooves and nooks. This wet coat was allowed to rest for 30 minutes then wiped clean.

After a suitable drying period the finish was hand buffed until a light sheen developed.

Reassembly was smooth and the finished product is below:

I've taken a filthy sling like that before and washed it along with work clothes. I stretched it back out to dry straight and then once COMPLETELY dry oiled it...and it came out about new after. The rest looks like it should now. I'd have done the same, complete strip clean and oil is usually the first thing done if it needs help at all.

Well in all fairness, when I bought that rifle, that was nearly a day and a half worth of wages at the job I was working. :lol: Local value on it today is $400-500 CDN more or less, with some optimists asking about $700 but I think they move for the $4-500 rate.

I have heard that, I have also seen these rifles for sale without the magazine on a few occasions, chuckled to myself and thought "best of luck!"

A Hakim mag can be made to work, but they sometimes want to fall out during shooting.

That is unintentionally funny suggestion. In Canada I have seen about 15-20 AG-42's for sale over the last 10 years, but I have only seen 1 Hakim in the same amount of time. They are much less common here.
