A Royal Army Ordnance Corps - Corporal handles several American Thompson ‘Tommy’ submachine guns being uncrated at the Central Ordnance Depot at Weedon in Northamptonshire following their arrival from the USA, sent under the terms of Lease-Lend. 23 March 1942.

The bottom should read "Cpl Bloggins taking 6 Thompsons to his car boot for transport home to his basement".

in the picture of the 3 NZ soldiers the guy on the right has a bayonet on his rifle and a bayonet in his scabbard. it makes me wonder if the bayonets on the rifles were added for dramatic effect like frank hurley used to add elements to his photo's in ww1.

You mean like a POSED photo? Say it ain't so!

I was actually thinking retouched or at least modified in the darkroom.

I would say a good many photos were "posed" during brief down times. Still, it captures a moment in time, so to speak. Some of the coloring is a bit off as one of the but plates has been colored silver, rather than brass in color.

Or is that when it was time to put them away again? Notice the wear, particularly on the buttplates, and the complete lack of grease etc.

It's always hard to say exactly what's happening in one of these photos. The coloring is out of whack because they WERE colorized after all. As for Capt(then Cpl) Laidler shuffling off with his Thompsons...let's not mention the pocket button undone...

The guy in the tree would be best served if sat on a limb behind the trunk of the tree so not so exposed. I'm sure the way he is perched now, you would see him for quite a distance. Has to be a posed photo

Aside from the Japanese in PTO that is, no sane person would set up in a tree.

Agreed, then the Boyes anti tank rifles found them good sport. Shoot through the tree trunk. That's still what would happen, even with that guy. A rifle round would go straight through.
