It's always hard to say exactly what's happening in one of these photos. The coloring is out of whack because they WERE colorized after all. As for Capt(then Cpl) Laidler
shuffling off with his Thompsons...let's not mention the pocket button undone...

The guy in the tree would be best served if sat on a limb behind the trunk of the tree so not so exposed. I'm sure the way he is perched now, you would see him for quite a distance. Has to be a posed photo

in PTO that is, no sane person would set up in a tree.

Agreed, then the Boyes anti tank rifles found them good sport. Shoot through the tree trunk. That's still what would happen, even with that guy. A rifle round would go straight through.
