New Crate Carbine

Is this legit, if so would anyone know what this would sell for since it probably won't be listed. I did look up Lt. Hafer and if it was him he lived a long life.

UNISSUED U.S. M1 CARBINE, INLAND MFG. IN IT'S ORIGINAL FACTORY WRAPPING*

Description:
30 cal. carbine, Inland mfg. in the 6747xxx serial range. Adjustable rear sight, low wood, with bayonet lug. It remains as new in the original grease and packing wrapper. It was purchased by Lt. Sebastian Hafer, 14 Feb. 1946 and has the accompanying paper work. In it's original shipping crate addressed from the A.P.O. San Francisco to Lt. Hafer's address in Gettysburg, Pa. where it has remained untouched for 71 years.

It just depends on the price of corn. Just because it was put into a grease bag and shipped in a home made box. Does not mean it was NIW. It could have been shot or otherwise monkeyed with before placing in the bag. It would have all the late parts except a push safety.

March/April time frame? If April it very well my be an M2. I don't think it's unissued. He shipped it to himself from the land of Fruits and Nuts to his home in Pennsylvania. Would have been easy to load it up with grease and paper then shipped. But he paid for it in......PESO's!!!! $32 US dollars or $64.00 in Peso's and it was the $64 in Peso's he paid. Hey it may have been issued to him on base and he just had to have it. Also got rid of the Peso's he couldn't use at him in PA.

It was shipped from Manila, Philippines, were the Peso was/is the official currency.

The whole thing about the "Crate" from the factory...that's not a factory shipping crate. The story seems to have migrated from a family member and turned to gospel.

I believe that back in the day US military officers could purchase their firearms (semi-auto) from the US military. He probably went to the local ordnance folks and asked for a new one. Several bottles of Scotch or whiskey probably help seal the deal. LOL!! The crate was probably locally built for that shipment.

If it has been sitting since 1946 it has a very good chance of being original and in very good condition, I would think! If someone could have a "good" look at it for evaluation it very well could be collectable, at a "decent" price! I agree that since it was shipped out of the country it has been used and not new.

It would almost NEED to be unwrapped and degreased for that. I'll bet that would never be allowed. Pay a premium and take a chance it's just a story. Paying for a story...

I have to agree with you on this one if the preservation of the firearm is not done correctly using cosmoline and paper. The barrel bore and internal parts can be toasted. This situation happened to many of the m1917 Enfield rifles that were "preserved" after WWI. When those rifles were brought out of storage for use in WWII many had the barrels rusted up and the barrels had be replaced. Good fortunate for ordnance folks that they had a bewildering supply of reserve spare barrels to do the rebarreling which dried up the supply of .30-06 M1917 barrels. As a result US Army Ordnance had to subcontract for new barrels. Sorry to digress.

The picture here is dated 1946. In his description it doesn't mention anything about it being a Bring Back. So we're these allowed to be brought back or like it said he bought it and had it shipped.

Why would this end up on G I and not a place like Rock Island Auctions or some other Classic Firearm Auction house, because of the fees or its Not legit. I'm thinking more and more that's there's something not right about this 70+ yr old untouched Carbine. Something that a Reputable Auction house would find. I'm Just Saying.

Exactly Jim...You have brought up some very good points as well as others memebers have also posted. Those Auctions houses like Rock Island just describe the item. A lot of people unfortunately go by the Item and Story on GB and GI among other's. Who's knows maybe they tried but was rejected. Rock Island Auctions do have High Standards and they do refuse to Accept Firearms to Auction off if they dont meet there Criteria. I just wonder why the owner of this Carbine won't cleaned it to show it with the Crate and the paperwork as part of it. I think that would make a difference.

I don't collect boxes, crates or grease.
But do find this Inland interesting.... Now just imagine if you could see it.
But with this seller using this greasy marketing angle, we'll probably never know what lays under.

Hello Charlie, Maybe my old eyes are deceiving me, but pic 8 of this .U. T code sure seems to have adjustable sight stake marks. Wore a type 3 band as well. Wood is pretty but I think it has issues, too.

No Worries Charlie, This Post was about that Crate Carbine and finding out if it was legit like I mentioned and to find out if the guy was trying to rip people off. I did see that Carbine when I was searching for a S P Carbine and to me that Stock looked just like a DGR Stock looks fake with crisp markings, loks like punch marks on dovetail with fake Flip Sight and Barrel has scar mark from a T-3 BB. Yes some poor guy got burned. But the one guy who paid just a little less than that for a really bad S.P. Carbine on Simpsons got burned horribly.

If anyone is interested in this Carbine it will cost you 8500.00. There's more paperwork and the Crate is the one that was used to ship it home in '46. He has a Website with some Really Nice looking Classic Firearms, but prices just WAY too much for me, but maybe not to some serious collectors. He does gets lots of calls about it and has turned down many offers, but after seeing his collection he does go after some nice ones that I wouldn't mind having a few of them if I was a Collector of all sorts of Firearms.

Imagine how long it would take you to de-grease that baby!
Or...... is the grease part of it's history?
Wonder if the grease has soaked in to the wood grain?

Interested in others thoughts on how you would go about De-greasing?

To me the Grease has to be removed, but I'm sure you have a method, but without seeing it that depends on what method you would use. I know people have there own ways, but until we can see the Stock it depends on the cleaning methods anybody or I would do and I know people will mainly disagree. I would use some Mineral Spirits then maybe a little dawn degreaser soap if its just on the surface and a little into to the Wood or if its real thick use some oven cleaner but watch it. I would assume that the grease is deep into the Wood for being on it for so many years and maybe has darken it a bit or a lot who knows. Then after that just oil it real good especially if it was stripped too much. I used Tung Oil on the last 2 I did. That's just possibly one way I would try. It's REALLY hard to know until you have it in your hands.

I did these 2 Stocks and the Dark one I use too much of something and had to use some Dark Military Walnut Stain mix with just a little bit of Scarlet Red. I cleaned them up with some Mineral Spirits and some Type of Cleaner I wont use again then I used Tung Oil until they started Bleeding then buffed them. They came out pretty nice and I was happy.

I had a dirty, dinged up S-HB stock and I steamed it. You would be surprised at the gunk that dripped out. Also removed a lot of the dings. reoiled one time with BLO and go to go.

I have a little hand held steamer so you don't have to try the dishwasher method described by some... :rofl: it works magic too. Just right for this type of thing...

Direct sunlight on my deck laid out on newspapers. Every so often take an old t-shirt and wipe the gunk off. That's how I did an Indian 2A1.

BruceHMX, might be on to something. Just tossing around thoughts.... Wonder if stood up in a sealed black trash bag would get hot enough to drain some off? Might look a little goofy, but hey if it makes some progress what the he!!.

Best to start by wiping any excess off you can first. Then.......... ???
I know my heat gun would melt it down.
I've used gel type hand cleaner, soaked then bristle brushed on some black/grimy stocks with good results, but still needs to be rinsed off.

Wrap it in an old cotton T-shirt or terry towel and put it in a black garbage bag in the sun. That should take off most of the grease. Then I personally use a clothe soaked in kero to finish wiping down the surface. Once that is done I can determine if anything else is needed.

Wash with lacquer thinner which removes everything but you'll have to stain and oil it afterward.

I wonder if someone paid the whole cow for that bag of beans...?

I know it's an old thread and this topic has been discussed before, but "the back window of a car" really hit home for me. In the early 50's, I left my Daisy #25 pump (with Daisy plastic scope) in the back window of our car while on a camping trip. I had to throw away the scope and the (now old) #25 still has a "gentle curve" in it's stock. The threaded inserts where the scope "use to be" still remind me of that day!

Fast Forward to the present: I have a "beater" stock on an Israeli return IBM that just oozes oil when you take it shooting on a hot sunny day. A couple of days ago, I tried laying it outside wrapped in a black plastic trash bag - not much happened and it didn't get very warm inside the bag. Then I remembered what happened to the Daisy. Next step was to lay the bag and the stock in a shallow cardboard box with an old window on top. Also, I inserted a thermometer (shielded from direct sunlight) at the end of the box to monitor the air temperature inside. I did this earlier this morning, and the last time I checked, the temp was 170F and the oil was running out! It's been a couple hours, so need to go check and wipe off more oil. :dancingbanana: - Bob

I accidentally discovered this method a few years ago. I just laid a carbine stock out in the hot East Tennessee Sun and it was amazing what started leaching out without even the slightest effort on my part. I like the tweaks other have talked about in this post if I ever feel the urge to clean another. BTW, the smell coming out it was something you don't get by using sandpaper, steel wool or especially a dishwasher.
