When did these grips come on the sceen?
Not sure what you are asking. The grip could be for anything, camera mount, directional antenna, carrying stuff, etc.
Front grips have always been available for firearms - handguns, rifles, shotguns. Doubt if commandos introduced them.
We never had anything like that. I think that it is a figment of someones imagination. The sort that we had that were fairly common in Malaya were a sort-of derivative of the rear grip mounted onto/bolted through the well of the butt slide near the front mounting pin. This was authorised, tried and tested under the authority of what was called a 'FEMOD'. Slightly slimmed down so that the bipod could fold rearwards so you could shoot the gun from the waist with the bipod either forwards or rearwards. The gun would rest on your pouches and you aimed by using the tracer. I have seen another seemingly 'approved' version where the front grip was attached by the front mounting pin. Quite how the short Gurkhas and Malay crunchies would have coped with this one is anyones guess as it'd have pulled their arms out of the sockets!
Thanks for you response Peter. Here is the link for it. I was wondering on what MK Bren it first came out on. Not a big deal just been doing a lot of reading and was curious about it. I've seen pictures and I think it mounts where the front tripod lug is. Link reads server error but it worked for me.

The type dlbard shows I believe is a US interpretation. They do mount thru the forward tripod mount and I suspect the were done that way to keep collectors from having to make a permanent alteration to their full or semi auto Brens. I have one on my Mk3 and will post a few pics. I purchased in the US. Mine has an adjustment screw that allows you to snug it up against the bottom of the slide, but hardle neccassary as the mount is so snug going into the tripod slot, I have to wiggle the pin a bit to get it to close.

dlbard, I purchased my first on off of GB. Paid $50 for it, then discovered Sarco carries the same thing for $24.95! Doh. $30.00 bucks in the UK doesn't sound too bad...

I just bought one plus a L4 mag and a repo MK1 stock handle. I think I might buy another and put one on my L4A3 and Mk3 Brens. Yours looks like its a good match with the other wood on your Bren.
Yes, turned out to be a nice match. The other grip does have much lighter wood. Considering so many stocks are well used/ well oiled, a lighter colored forward grip is probably not going to match any wood short of a newly manufactured butt, which may have been the makers thought?
That grip has a similar if not the same profile as those fake Mk5 Sten forgrips.
We only had Mk3 Brens and L4A2's in Malaya plus the odd L4A1 that you'd see kicking around. When the Battalions went back to Oz it was back to Mk1's and 2's, leaving the UK issue L4's for the next battalion and so on. But in 68/9 or so, it was all M60. You can imagine the disappointment after being brought up with the GPMG/L7/FN-MAG!
I can. When I went to Australia in '77 it was all M60s except when we contacted an armoured unit in the field. There was a 7.62 Bren, unknown to me what mark or model but I wanted to try that one out...since I was the machine gunner anyway. Then I had to wait until the end '80s to get the MAG in form of the C6 here. The I could understand what Peter would be on about. As one said, where was this when we WANTED to do this stuff?Quote:
