So I bought this Jungle Carbine. It looks pretty good, made at BSA in 1945 but the bolt is a different serial number. Was in the midst of cleaning it today but I can't get the firing pin out, stuck in pretty good so its soaking in some LPS 3 overnight, then tomorrow I'll try again. Pics are in my gallery.
Please don't remove the firing pin unless really necessary. If there's crud behind it, just flush the area with a solvent (WD40 works for me). The pin is sometimes staked/expanded during assembly to the cocking piece. Threads can be damaged during unnecessary disassembly.
So when should you clean the pin and bolt assy, after a certain amout of rounds, usage, years? I just got backing from shooting mine and it shot great, just the usual amout of "field cleaning"?Quote:

All aside, there IS no user cleaning for the bolt in detail, never was. It just needs wiping and oil both inside and out. Just enough inside to keep it moving. Make sure the screw at the back stays tight too...on the cocking piece. Paintbrush or toothbrush around the extractor.Quote:

Wow AdE, ain't that the truth! Lets not forget taking the perfectly fitted and functioning parts and changing them for "correct" factory manufacture parts when the owner doesn't have a clue how to fit them. I've seen it all and will continue to do so I'm sure.
Well I put a scope on my Jungle Carbine. A Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16x44 FFP EBR-2A MOA rectical, also Vortex rings and a BadAce Tactical NDT Scope Mount. Haven't shot it yet with the scope on, waiting for a little warmer weather to go to the outside range.
I will be very interested to hear how she shoots with the scope on.Quote:

Keep in mind the LE were built for men much shorter than we are today. Butt is usually quite short bringing your eyebrow closer to the scope than you would want. Consider one of those slip on pads to lengthen the pull and prevent the scope/eyebrow contact. Second what harry mac said as the scope will have you lifting your face higher on the butt.
Certainly the cut eyebrow is something to be considered with the snappy carbine.
I think the slip on pads a great idea,to give you some eye relief without having to hold your head uncomfortably to the rear to avoid the scopes sucker punch!
The amount of people I have seen over the years with the tell tale half moon cut eyebrow at the range....

I don't want to pee on the OP's cornflakes, & I wish him every success & lots of fun with his new rifle & scope rig, but I can't help wondering if it isn't throwing good money after bad fitting a "dog's willy" scope to a type of rifle that was hardly renowned for its pin-point accuracy in the first place. Just a thought; I hope he's got a good one & that it's a tack driver, & I'm sure he'll enjoy it regardless.
The no 5 has the same recoil as any other rifle of similar calibre and size. It is that hard butt plate and short stock that causes painful memories.
When I bought mine, it was fitted with a 'S' marked short stock, which I hadn't spotted till after handing over the money......and it was indeed, quite unpleasant to shoot, and awkward. However I was lucky in that I still owned a de-act No.5 and by chance as I put both together some time later, I found they were different lengths, and upon looking at the de-act No.5 discovered it had a 'L' marked long stock.....:dancingbanana:Quote:

It's not the recoil that's the problem, it's the drop in the comb.
If the stock was more in line then the recoil would be straight back instead of climbing, with the resultant reduction of clearance between your eyes nose and rearsight.:crying:
