NO4 Mk1 problem?

About 1 month ago I got my No4 mk1.I was so exited this was my first experience with any enfield rifle (besides the m1917 but that is not a enfield). When i first got it i inspected it and it was awesome it is a savage made in 1942 with no star.When i went to go shoot it i loaded it with stripper clips no problem, I shot it no problem but when I went to extract it was very hard to extract. Chambering a round was as smooth as butter but extraction is real rough. I compared it to my Norwegian rework K98K in 30-06 and it was so easy to extract in comparison.Keep in mind this is only with a live round or a spent cartridge.The gun without a cartridge is very smooth on extraction. Any suggestions of what the problem might be? if you need me to clarify on anything or send pictures just ask.Anything will help thanks.

When you say 'live round', do you mean one that has been chambered but not fired?

Can you post a picture of a fired case?

Is there a pitted or crud filled chamber? Could just be an accumulation of dried grease and maybe surface rust...

As Jim said, cosmoline goes granite hard, you may have a few old deposits in the chamber.

Give it a 'really' good clean and try chambering a drill round or spent case to see if there are any consistent marks on the case.

The FIRST question is this. How hard is it to lift the bolt. If it is hard then that is primary extraction and is so, it is without doubt a chamber problem.

Im sorry i cant post a picture of a fired case but in comparison to an unprimed brass case it looks normal there are no major scratches or bulges that are abnormal.Yes when i refer to a "live round" I do mean one that has been chambered but not fired.

Factory Ammo or reloads?

Reloads - Neck sized or F/L sized?

I think you guys might be right.After clambering a dummy i noticed there were scratches on the bullet and the case.Also the problem only occurs when there is a cartridge so that would make sense. Originaly thought the extractor became "sharp" and it was pushing the cartridge on the other side of the chamber. Thank you

Yes, I don't have a problem and they function the same as normal factory loads or surplus.I don't plan to shoot many hand loads through my Enfield. I like to handload for my Ross MkIII.

Sorry but I am now confused.
Can you just repeat what the problem actually is ?

I thought that it was 'extraction' but you say you don't have any problem with Reloads, Factory rounds or Surplus rounds.

To be honest Al, he is asking the ' my car won't start, what's the matter with it' question. Simply too little info to proceed further.................

I shot it no problem but when I went to extract it was very hard to extract. Chambering a round was as smooth as butter but extraction is real rough Right got that bit.......so far pointing towards perhaps what malady my MkIII had ended up being a stuffed chamber in the end with a great divet in it.
Keep in mind this is only with a live round or a spent cartridge...................:confused: Ok which ones giving the trouble I thought it was after it was fired or are we just inserting a fired round!

A sharp extractor ? if it was pushing it to one side then you would notice resistance when the round started to feed into the chamber as your pushing it with no camming advantage like closing a bolt.
I think you may have a rough chamber if its marking dummy rounds get some 2000 grit wet & dry make a rod with a slot in it (dowel) cut a strip of S P off the wet/dry put that in the slot bit of machine oil or RP-7 whatever put the dowel in a drill and then lightly buff the chamber clean the oil & stuff from the chamber and go to the range and go again, just one thing was it checked over by a gunsmith familiar with this weapon system, posting pics can help a great deal in these matters otherwise its as post #12 Peter say's.
