A mint unfired 42 Maltby, Trying to value it

Unfired except for proofing. Just trying to just set a sale price for it. I can't find another one like it for price comparison.
I've had this rifle for many years but as I've hit my 80th birthday, it's time to move it on as I am selling off most of my collection. Problem is, it may be the only one, or at least one of a very few like it, that are still around in the condition it's in, being still mint and un fired, except for proofing, and it still has it's originally made disposable parts. Because of this I'm not sure what price to put on it and I'm just asking for a "general" ball park value from knowledgeable folks here so I can advertise it for sale. I know what used Maltby's generally sell for, but this one is like a museum piece and I can't find another one in the same condition for price comparison. Here are the photos and description, I would appreciate any value suggestions.
I know it's not worth big bucks but it is unique and should be worth more then just an average Enfield. Thanks. Ray

This is my inventory listing have I have of it.

1942 dated unfired except for proofing, Maltby #16968 rifle with traces of cosmoline in it . The rifle has no US import stamps and no British added export stamps, (tons, England, etc). Besides it's mint condition, it is probably one of a very few, and even could be the only one still in existence that remains in the condition it is as it just it came off the assembly line in 1942 with the exception of the stock letters. In addition to it's rare condition, it was one that was made with the very early war expedient parts having the solid bolt handle, no grove striker knob, no half cock striker, altered safety, noticable by the open area behind the safety lever. As production caught up, these parts were removed and/or replaced. The stock has large FNR letters stamped on it. Unknown what those FNR letters stamps represent. Felixstowe is a port town on the East coast of England in the county of Suffolk. Or an arsenal inventory file. These are just guesses though. This is a fairly rare and colletable Enfield rifle as it just may be the only one like it around still in mint/unfired except for proofing condition and with the expedient parts.

People are asking 2-3K for their special No.4 rifle but they stay on the site for ever its the old addage I am afraid what someone is willing to pay there is a T on used guns here asking 8.5K not sure if its sold but if it does then thats good because I paid way less than that for mine, not as miserly figures some have paid here but still cheaper than 8.5K.

I'll add my comments on it: Since it lacks an "England" or BNP, and was not updated with the replacement of the solid wartime production expedient cocking piece (these are about $20-30 on epay) and sight to a Mk.I, and given that the "FNR" stock stamping cannot be found anywhere in any British listing of such abbreviations in any of the books or site forums and references I have, then my guess is that it was surplussed in the 1960s (as many were with countries going to 7.62 NATO) from Pakistan, India, Greece, Indonesia, Austria, etc., etc. when these came in by the thousands in conex containers, pallet loads, etc. The "FNR" stamp is for one of these reserve units, governmental entities, finance, or police or security of some kind. There are many unissued condition "mint" No.4s that came in like, this, overwhelmingly Savage and LB. If it came in from England, it avoided postwar upgrades, BNP, and "ENGLAND" export stamps, which is unlikely to me. I have a Maltby that is close in condition, but with a grooved cocking piece that is likely original because my Maltby 42 is earlier. I won it at auction about 6 years ago for $350 IIRC. I think the Gunboards Enfield forum was spot on it valuing at exactly what I valued it at last year, $600-1000 in the US. You may get some bidding insanity on Gunbonker, but I believe at least some of the ridiculous prices you see there can be attributed to shill bidding, which distorts the actual market. The US Enfield market is not like the Enfield market in Australia or the UK where highly restrictive gun control and supply is more limited than the US or even Canada. I think the condition is very nice, exceptional, and a bonus. I think the "FNR" stamp is not a bonus and if it was mine it would be worth a little more not being on there. If someone wants a solid cocking piece they can replace that and I don't think one could tell if done properly. I welcome critique, correction, and such.

I don't think it would to be honest. The website 'By Sword by Musket' has a Savage Lend Lease, mint unused condition for £965

The Irish Contract No.4 Mk2's go for £1000. Those sat on dealers racks for £1500 don't sell.

I would say max value of this rifle is £1k in the UK. Why would anyone spend several thousand pounds on it, when they could get a No.4 T (Less Telescope) Rifle for less, or a No.4T for £3500 upwards/

If a reputed proof fired only Savage (the least sought after in UK by a collector) is £1k then a similar condition Maltby (quite high sought after by collectors) has to min £1.5k, surely?
(I do agree with the other poster that the unknown FNR stamped stock could be a turn off to a serious collector)

And the few mint 'less telescope' 4T's I've seen have been way over £2k........and a collector won't be going anywhere near a £3.5k 4T, which at that price range that I've looked at are all mongrels or faked.

It is unusual to see a rifle with the substitute parts still installed. These were pretty thoroughly culled out and replaced.
Not too many years ago I saw a batch in Ontario that had retained all the expedient features, some including the fabricated trigger guard. Don't know where they were sourced.

That it still has those substitute parts is a reason why I believe it was surplussed in from a country not England.

tiriaq, If it was the pile of No.4's CS Military Collectables had, I think they came from Italian Navy stores via the UK.

These were at Accuracy Plus in Peterborough. They could very well have been part of that batch.

Rayg: I recall your old thread from 2013 about this rifle. In that one you showed a closeup of the upper bolt handle with what appears to be electro-pencilled crossed flags or similar. I was curious if you've found other examples of this on original Maltbys? It is a beautiful rifle but if I were a potential buyer I would want to see photos of the serial font on bolt and barrel and markings on the wood. I would guess that up here in Canada you'd be able to get $1000 (Can) fairly easily or more with patience. The market values here are not totally dissimilar to the US (I can suggest this having imported a couple). While thinking about it, it might also help in selling to take some natural light photos that bring out the hue of the original bluing. Regards.

Hambone: I used a company called "Borderview" but I can't recall if they work both ways. My recollection is that it was around $200 per rifle all in (a nice '16 Mk III, and a fair Ishapore Mk I**IP). Check their website as they have pretty good info. Regards.

And still having all the expiedient parts on it. And which has not been molested in any way with the exception of the initials on the stock, and who knows what they mean or who added them. Some posters on line keep guessing a value by referring to one with a non original issue rear sight, as their low estimate price of $600 to $1000 not stating condition. All I need is a price estimate of a minty one comparable to mine as it is, with no import stamps and still with expiedient parts. Ray

This is about transparency, candor, and good information. You are not telling the truth. You offered it to me for $800 about two years ago as it was about the only thing unsold on your list. I declined because I, and everyone else who saw the list evidently felt that too high. About six months ago I inquired again, said I would pay the $800 and you fidgeted all about and declined, stating it was now worth much more than that. No problem, that's your right. I thought my $800 offer to be fair and honest and consistent with what you wanted. That's it.

If you are really asking opinions and not shopping your rifle by "inquiring as to value" on the various forums, then you should have no problem with my opinion. You evidently thought I was being less than honest with you when I told you privately that I thought the rifle was worth between $600 and $1000. That has now been independently confirmed at Gunboards Enfield forum and here as well. Nothing I've emailed or posted is untrue or controversial. You've been shopping for blind bids on that rifle on forums for years now, knowing that posts like this will solicit private inquiries, i.e., you're engaged in blind bidding games. I took the bait but the game has worn me out. On our site I wouldn't allow it because it encourages bad deal conduct. I told you privately months ago what you've been told on GB and here: if you do not wish to place it with a price on a WTS forum, put it on the Gunbonker auction and see what happens. At the end of the day it's a nice No.4 Maltby that was surplussed from some foreign country. it isn't the world's most desirable Enfield No. 4. Most of the guys here have nice Maltbys. I do, for $350 at auction six years ago. The difference between mine and yours is a $25 (if I wanted to replace it) substitute standard cocking piece and about 5% points of blue, and my stock isn't popped with "FNR" which for me is not desirable. I'm sure someone here or at Gunboards could get it if they offered you $1200 for the rifle alone, which is the price you are angling for with these "how much is it worth" posts on all the Enfield forums. Good luck with that, I'm not paying it nor do I want to have to buy your Luftwaffe trousers to get it. Maybe someone somewhere needs the world's finest Maltby No.4 for $1200 and some small Luftwaffe trousers ;) Good luck.

Thank you much Ridolpho. I will look at that. I know that Simson's does some importing from Canada. They had nice Inglis pistols, some with the decals, and discretely importer marked on the insides of the mag wells. From what I've seen, for many things Canadian and US prices are close, such that the $200 kicker and import marking required here may make the pain level too high, unless it something rare and cool.

Hambone you are correct, As several years ago I had included that gun on a list of guns I was selling, but I had removed it from the list. Possibility you missed that I had removed it. As far as the $600 dollar price referenced, that is most likely the price of the gun that was posted in an attempt of price comparison on another site where I also posted seeking a value of mine. That gun's rear sight has been replaced with a non original civilian one and removing it would damage/leave evidence of the removal. Other wise it was a nice gun, but it should not be used as a price comparison for an original one. There has been mention of a $1000 value here and on the other site, but with out any description as to correctness or condition of those guns. Again, I do not feel the gun is worth big bucks, Unique and fairly rare yes, but still only a Maltby Mark III and maybe just worth some what more then just the average Maltlby. It could even be a museum representative piece. All I wanted to do was just get a collector's educated estimated value of it. I honestly feel it might be worth a little more then a thousand dollar which if so, I would be very happy with, considering I only paid $100, for it ten or fifteen years ago..Ray .

When you can pick up (in the UK) an Enforcer ('rarer' than 4T's with production under 700 pieces) for between £1000 - £1500* I would value this Maltby at something under £1000

Maybe you are looking at the 'London Premium', they are less when you get out in the 'sticks'.
I purchased 2x No4s from a local 'rural gunshop' for £100 for the pair. They were sat in amongst the shotguns and .243 'stalking rifles'.

I've been nothing but fair and honest with you in our prior dealings and on my assessment of the rifle Ray. You know this, or at least now it should be double confirmed. I think you're a good fellow. I understand that you have collected a long time and do not wish to put something out there for less than what you can get for it. However, in chasing that extra $50 or $100 you can lose out, be penny rich and pound poor. I know you also understand as being involved in this hobby for a long time that sometimes windows open and close for buyers and sellers. Prices and values are not linear over the short term, e.g., a five year timeline, they go up and down with the economy and other trends. Some things go flat or go down in value. Adjusted for inflation I believe Carcanos may be worth less today than they were in the 1960s. Yet I still like them, which confirms I don't collect with any intellect I may have. If you wish to squeeze every potential nickel out of that rifle, then put it on Gunbonker awkshun. You'll pay an awksun fee and deal with a bunch of lookie loos, tire kickers, and some imbeciles and pay a fee. But hey, as I posted at GB, you may snare two deep pocketed dueling codheads who can't live without the world's rarest Maltby No.4 with a "FNR" stock who will bid it up into the stratosphere ;) Or maybe not and you'll get less. That's the excitement of auction fever I reckon. On GB you said you paid $100 for it ten years ago (which is a deal no matter where you are in the US/GB/Can.) so quibbling over the potential difference in price you're talking about all this time seems a little much, but again, it's your rifle and you can ask whatever you want.

This has been an interesting post. I can see the rifle is in fabulous condition; but how can you be sure that it is unfired apart from proofing? Unless you've personally picked it up from the proof house and stuck it in the safe.
I have a Maltby that was stored for over 70 year's; it was a parachute drop to the local French Resistance in the summer of 1944. It came with a bandolier of the original ammo and the original bayonet and oil bottle.
When I got it; there were no wear marks on the magazine plate or the bolt rail edge. But I know for a fact it has been fired; not enough to show any real wear and tear; but fired all the same.
It cost 750 Euro's.

30Three, Yours sounds like a real nice rifle also and with a great history. Mine may just be a little unique in being minty and still as it just it came off the assembly line, less the unknown stock stamp, and having the disposal parts and no England or import stamps. Can't be too many like it you think?
As to being unfired, you are right on that claim, and which means probably no rifle can not claim to be unfired after proofing as there probably is no way to prove it. Firing is firing, I will never use that claim again, Lol, Ray

In my area it's a $500 or $600 max... I purchased a early 1952 no4 mk2 that's wasn't a contract rifle for $400 this year and it's a beautiful example of a no4 mk2. I thought I paid too much at the time but it's condition has convinced me otherwise. In general the smle, no4 mk1 and no4 mk2 will go for about $400-500 after negotiating prices. Jungle carbines are higher for some reason... a LGS has a very very rough condition ishapore SMLE for $100... It's beyond repair IMO. Im in the show me state.

Great job rayg. People just in general everywhere do not know what they have. I saw a old man recently walk into a lgs wanting $300 for a vintage colt sp1 a1 type rifle. Guy behind the counter said, " well i dont want to rip you off, ill do $350 . " sold to the gun store. They put it on gunbroker and it went for $1500 i believe.

Well the buyer backed out. Because when I first got the rifle it was missing the sling swivels. I had replaced them with the same condition ones when I first got the rifle. The missing swivels may have something to do with the initials on the stock, Ray

That sale did not go through because of the replaced parts (the sling swivels) that you didn't mention. It was advertised as a "rare" factory original and unaltered rifle. With swapped out / replaced small parts it is not that. If you are going to place great weight upon its factory originality as the ad "hook" to get top dollar, you need to divulge that you replaced / added parts. The missing swivels was a discussion you had long ago which popped up on a search for the "FNP" stamped in the stock. Swapped out small parts and such are not a big deal on a $300 No.4. Once one gets into territory north of $650 then one expects a factory original rifle, particularly if it is so advertised, which is the significance of its extreme "rarity" and "no other one like it." Again, not a big deal except when one gets well past median price range.

Those swivels were missing when I first got the rifle many years ago when I had posted they were missing when I first got the rifle and I replaced them, but didn't recall this until you jogged my memory. I have since changed my inventory listing indicating such. Outside of the replaced swivels, the rifle is otherwise a minty condition and a scarce Malty being in the condition it is especially made with all the original expedient parts and having no import stamps. There may not be many maltby's like it around, if any. I still wonder why the swivels were purposely removed. There must have been a reason, maybe connected to the stock letters, parade rifle, Naval, range etc? In any case it looks that it possibly was not fired after proofing. Ray

They aren't that scarce. No import stamps usually means that the rifle was surplused prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act. In the case of the No.4, your rifle may well have been culled by the military because something is out of specification. I hate to burst bubbles here but this is a fact although there were some good rifles surplused too prior to 1968. The No.4 was kept in reserve stores until the 1980's in the UK and other Commonwealth countries. The best ones I've seen, (British rifles), were surplused directly from Donnington in the late 1980's and arrived in the USA via Interarms in the early 90's. Then the South African reserve stores which were also imported via Interarms. I have a 1942 Maltby just like yours and have seen many others. I have two 1941 Maltby rifles that are also excellent but I'd never advertise them as "mint" or "unfired". It just ain't realistic. This horse has been flogged to death in my humble opinion.

So there are a lot of 41 Maltby's in what appear to be in unused, minty, condition with no visible wear on any of the parts, like mine still around. Sorry, I had no idea, I thought it was something special. Well as they say, you live and learn. Anyway it was a fun thread, Ray

My best SWAG was that it was a foreign police force of some kind, old Commonwealth, or recipient of war aid or post war surplus aid which was then surplussed into the US pre-1968, hence the lack of BNP proof, etc. I seriously doubt that the lack of swing swivels has anything to do with shipboard use as if there was any place where a sling was necessary it would be shipboard (boarding, gangways, ladders, etc.). I research it a great deal and never found anything close to British or significant Commonwealth (e.g., Oz, Kiwi, Canadian, SA, etc.) use.

Personally, as soon as I saw the FNR stamped markings I thought that they were too recent. If you see stamp markings on rifle woodwork, after a year or so, the wood seems to close down on the marks as though it is sort or repairing itself if you like. You can always see them but they just don't look fresh. Full of oil and grease and grit. We used to see lots of BW and FWA or FWM and SO that came through and you could just tell that they were much older marks wqithout even looking at the date codes. Just my opinion for what it's worth

I can't find the FNR markings in any of my reference books. A wild *** guess would be an Indian or West Asian police force. It's certainly a nice rifle that hasn't seen much use.

An update re valuation: I ran across the closed auction. No bids with a $1000 USD reserve.

I ran it one time for seven days and then pulled it, too many Enfield's listed at the same time;

Look Hambone you didn't want it so leave be. There's nothing wrong with it except the replaced swivels.

Peter those initials do not look fresh when you see them in person. I think maybe Brian may have some good guesses, Ray

I thought this thread was about the value of a No. 4 1942 Maltby. You didn't believe me when I told you $650-1000 (tops). The gentlemen here confirmed it. I believe it important to the thread, which you started, to fully address the question you posed to the collecting community here. I think that bids at a national (really international) firearm auction that runs for a week is responsive to your inquiry beyond conjecture and informative helpful to the rest of the posters here who freely provided you their opinions and knowledge, in good faith. I also believe, again, as I previously stated, that given what you are asking, and the representations you made, required from the beginning that the replaced swivels be mentioned at the outset.

Ray, it's a forum discussion that you requested and encouraged. As a forum discussion you can't control and direct discussion to provide the answers and results that you want to achieve without regard to any other opinions and information. If the original query had just been about the unidentified marking on the butt, that would have been fine, but all the manoeuvering about the question of value has just been irritating, and in the end unproductive.
