Good Day,
I have recently acquired what i believe to be a genuine parker hale M82 rifle. The rifle is complete except for the hand stop and sling. Scope is Khales ZF69 6x42. If someone on this site could check the serial number of my rifle i would be grateful. The serial is G -15477 or S-15477 its hard to make out the prefix letter.

Could you post an image of the serial number as there is no trace of it solely on the 15477. If it was an M82 its prefix would be an R, and it doesn't sound like you have anything that looks like that there.
If I have the image I will forward it onto one of the ex engineers at PH for his guidance.

I had another look at the serial number after applying some white chalk and it is in fact G-15477. The rifle has been coated in some type of light paint long ago making the prefix hard to make out. The barrel has a parkerised finish which also has remnants of the same finish.
Does the G prefix number show up anywhere? I will try and post some photos of my rifle soon.

Sadly not, be of interest to see images of the rifle as it could be a "special" in some way, but I can ask the question once we have the images.
The G suffix was attributed to the C3A1 contract but placed after the number ie 00001G not at the start.
There are quite old Parker Hale African rifles which start H02302 so one has to assume soemwhere in the dim distant past a G could have been used, but there are absolutely none on the PH records, which I would have thought would have been logged.

So I've taken some photos of my Parker Hale rifle and i thought i would post a few for fellow enthusiasts to look at and make comment. I am convinced that this rifle has been the way it is for a long time. The handling marks on the barrelled action,stock and scope is uniform. I also found the serial number penciled in the forend in the barrel channel. The barrel and scope had at some stage camouflage tape of some kind applied and the gum that remained was slow going to remove. Serial number is S-15477.

The serial number and configuration you have makes this a M82. I see it is proofed at 20T. Can you tell me the number and letters in the proof circle on the barrel. It can be decoded to tell us the DOM. What is the serial number on the scope..it's the Nr xxxxx number on the right side of the eyepiece. Also see wood disturbance need the tip of the stock where a stud has been inserted...is there a rail on the underside? Ron (Canada).
Thanks for the reply Ron. Yes there is a rail on the under side of the forend. The hand stop and front sling swivel are missing and I’m tipping the elderly gentleman that I bought the rifle from put the stud there. The numbers and letters in the circle are F8 with 4 underneath and the scope number is 222111. The rifle shows wear on the external finish but the bore and bolt face are excellent. It groups surprisingly well fo an old rifle.

Check your Proof Date code again. I think you have "FB over 4" which makes a DOM of 1980 (FB) and proofed by Inspector 4. The Kahles scope number is approx this date as well. It's well beyond the Canadian C3 range. Very nice M82 fullbore rifle. These were very accurate and a lot of fun to shoot. Ron (Canada).
Agree totally with Ron, albeit the S prefix was always attributed to the M81 with an R going onto M82's but I know in conversations I have had with Bill Smallwood about that, he states at the "end of Parker Hale" under Modular Industries, they had to use as many parts as they could to complete rifles and little or no creedance was paid to a letter, just get the rifles sold and out of the door policy.
Concur with the views it is definately an M82, of which I can find no trace in the PH files, and what I said earlier perhaps reflects that. The workforce were lucky to have been retained, and thereby morale must have taken a serious dive.
M82 was indeed stamped Special Proof 20 Tons, so that is correct and confirms it for me
The M81 Classic rifle was a Sporter, but the actions were exactly the same, so you can see how easily it is to get confused.

Going from memory here, my issue M82 serial number was S10955, issued at the end of 1979 when I did the conversion course (we were using 303 No I Mk III HT Sniper Rifles till then). As an add, I bought a PH M85 brand new in 1988, again, from memory, Serial # 00208F in Nato Green stock, I fitted a Khales Zf84 scope to it.
Your PH M85 S/N 00208F was produced on 23rd Janaury 1987 it fired 19.3mm group @100 yards with 10 rounds. It was fitted with a Green NATO stock and sold to the Australian Army with no scope fitted.

Interesting about the M85, I was still serving in the Army when I bought that rifle new. I was told by the Rep (cannot remember who the distributor of Parker Hale was back then) that the rifle was one of four that had been ordered by the Australian Federal Police. At the last moment, they decided that they only wanted 3, he remembered that I was a Sniper and I got first offer on it. It cost AU$3,500, when my yearly wage then was only $29,000 Gross. I fitted a few different scopes to it till I settled on a Kahles Helia Zf84. Beautiful accurate rifle even with Australian F4 ball. The rifle is still in Australia, owned by a member of Misurps.

Thats good to hear. It could be the PH record keeping wasn't that good as they are only books, or a simple change of direction and some others went to the Army at the same time.

I am negotiating teh purchase of what I am told is an M82. The serial No ? - 21221 can't make out the prefix plus the cross bolt hole has been filled. Any help please?
Some good news Parker Hale M82 Serial Number R-21221 was refurbished on the 5th June 1992 and re marked as a 1200 TX and sold with a large number of other rifles to a Mr T. Hallam on the 5th November 1996, having all returned to the PH in the UK from Canada as M82's originally.
No other record survived as to their onward life.
Hope this helps in some way, be interested to hear where it has ended up. ;)
What is stamped on barrel - looks like a Parker Hale 1200 TX. What is it proof at ? 19 or 20 Tones? If on Gils list it may be an M82 if an "R" prefix. Scope is commerical ( I can't see the serial number however the turret I see is commerical). The serial number prefix would tell it all.

Steve1152 - Is the rifle located in the UK. Your potential purchase is most interesting. See if you can get the proof marking detail and the scope serial number. Ask if the bolt knob is a full round ball or is it flat on the underside? You may have come upon something that's quite valuable. At a minimum it's a M82 and perhaps more.

Thanks for all your messages and valuable information. The rifle is proofed to 20T if you look closely at the first picture I posted it does show the UK proof mark and pressure test to 20T.

Like the everybody else, my view would be to go for it anyway, as long as the price is right. The PH records on the M82's is accurate, no scopes fitted or sold with them, so yours has arrived from somewhere, but looks right a number could be helpful to try to group it with others from the same batch perhaps if its recorded.

I would say £2-£3k really dependant on what you have there, it is a difficult one, as PH rifles seem to be fetching good prices recently at auction. ;)

Established that T. Hallam is in fact Tony Hallam of Charnwood Ordnance.
He did indeed did buy a lot of guns from Parker Hale back in 1996.
He is related to Roger Hale by marriage. He owns one of the largest collection of sniper rifles around, although Bill Smallwood ex PH, believes he may be selling a few off now.

Steve1152. I'm assuming R-21221 is in the UK. Here's my comments;
1. T Hallam purchased approx 54 M82 from Parker Hale 5/11/1996 - "Gil Boyd" has the records and confirms this entry in the Parker Hale log. It was sold as a M82.
2. The "R" prefix to the serial number is underlined. This means it's a repurposed receiver built into a M82. R Hale retained the salvage rights from the C3a1 program and torn down the majority of C3 returns to salvage reusable components. Receivers that were built into M82's had the "R" underlined and were originally C3's and intended to be sold as 1200TX target rifles. I've seen a number of these surface. There were also some R serial number target rifles sold as 1200 TX that were restocked C3 barreled actions. Yours has a new bolt in the M82 style with the full round knob and the M82 handle profile. Most likely rebarrelled - the date code on the left side of the barrel below the stock line would confirm built date. It's in a circle showing 2 letters and a number. It's an interest piece to a C3 collector.
3. Steel scope bases C3 correct. Also used on M82's
4. Stock is 1200TX . The butt vertical dimension is longer than a C3 or M82 using the spacer's as a guide. I'd buy a correct C3 or M82 stock and toss what's on it. Greatly enhance value.
5. ZF scope is outside the C3 range as pointed out by "Lee Enfield" and has commercial turrets - so it's representative however not C3 correct. M82 if they were scoped for Australia are generally in a much higher serial number range.
You don't see these offered very often and most target shooters that had acquired one of these weren't into the collector history.

Looks like R-31350 was build some the same lot of parts as R-21221. I did see this listed for sale and I believe it was imported into the USA. I do not know the purchaser however he did end up with a very fine example of a M82 or a C3 rebuild. As for the price - you need to consider the history and rareness. When you consider that Parker Hale sold very few of these to Canada's military (DND) - less than 500 delivered (484 according to C Law) of which less than 300 were scoped - the price is not out of line. Correct scope range is 158562 to 158855 including spares (C Law).

R-21221 has a lot of potential. In it's current state - ie with an incorrect bolt and stock your estimate is in the ballpark. Off course the final value is between the Buyer and Seller. R-31250 had been updated so we know that UKP 4000 is good guidance. If it had it's correct kit ZF69 scope, rings, scope case, sling, drag bag, transit chest - a lot more.

Hi Ron, I think my rifle (R-31350) was bought by a UK member on here (at least that's what I deduced from the serial number enquiry he made on here a few years ago) and from seeing his later posts I believe that it was that member who changed the stock/scope etc. When it was later sold by the UK dealer late last year/early this it may well have been exported.Quote:

Found my file. It was sold by Highwood Classic Arms in the UK. When I looked at it, it had a 1200TX stock not a C3 stock and came with the correct 5E iron sights and a Kahles ZF84 scope. Simon usually keeps pictures od sold rifles posted on his website http://www.highwoodclassicarms.com under. If you do a search you may see the pictures of R-31350.

Hi Ron, Yes Simon at Highwood sold it on my behalf.
This is a picture below of it sometime after I had it, up for sale with another dealer but I assume before this sale it was in private hands after I sold it via Simon. Stock changed and now wearing an S&B scope.
If the owner after me is a member here perhaps they might chime in and shed more light on its changes/history after I had it.

I'll dig a little deeper...busy in the shop today. I see the pictures on Hertige Arms site. As you point out - the stock was changed out for a C3a1 beech stock ( a few of those on the open market), a C3a1 bolt and a S&B scope. Should be put back to all C3 and its Owner would have a very valuable collectible. If the Owners on this site PM my account.

Ron, that bolt was on it when I acquired it so it's not been changed out since I sold it. The only changes that I can see happened were the stock and the scope. What makes you think it went to the US?
p.s. I believe that the dealer that sold it in its latest guise that I pointed you towards is a member here so I hope he doesn't mind me posting the link to his website. If he's not a forum member here then apologies for my misunderstanding but I could well imagine that if you keep an eye on that website he may soon have another M82 for sale :D
The chap who was communicating with me was from the West Coast USA. He told me he was going to proceed with the purchase - not 100% sure he did . If the current Owner can confirm the purchase and the country of residence that would be great. If the bolt that's on the rifle now was there when you owned it then it was a replacement - only 2 PH's that had the guide rib and tactical handle was the M85 and C3a1 - could be either.

Ron, If that's the case then I'm fairly certain that the bolt on my old rifle was fitted by Parker Hale when they reworked the returned C3s into target rifles and/or M82's. IIRC the bolt had Birmingham 20T proof marks that matched those on the rifle and the style and position of the electro-stencilled serial on the bolt is exactly the same as on my other M82, so I'm convinced that the "tactical" style bolt was a PH factory fit during the rework. I think the M87 (used by UK police) also had that style of bolt handle.Quote:

They "guide rib" is the "rib" in the middle of the bolt. receiver has a slot milled into it for this feature. Typical of Mauser designed actions. Parker Hale used this feature on 1200/M82 actions as well as M85 and C3a1.

Sorry my misunderstanding, I read it from your earlier reply that it was only the M85 and C3a1 that had the rib on the bolt whereas I think you meant that those rifles had the rib AND the tactical handle and you're saying that the M87 did not have the guide rib on the bolt but it did have the tactical handle. M82s/1200s did also have the rib on the bolt but not the tactical handle. I think I get it now!Quote:

steve1152 aka AGS Heritage Arms. Thanks for the info on the M82 I am still negotiating. I am still a little puzzled over what is original and not original. The stock is obvioisly wrong.
The M82 on my website is part of my collection it keeps my M85 company in my gun cabinet. I obtained my RFD around a year ago and I needed to put some rifles on it, so I put the M82 on to fill the space. I took it off as I now have trading history. I have plenty of pictures of it. I got the rifle restocked and bedded as the stock on it when I bought it was not correct or refurbished. I have the original iron sights and the Kahles ZF84 scope. I put the Schmidt & Bender 2.5-10 on it just to see how it would compare against the Kahles ZF84.
I am a Parker Hale fan and sniper collector.
Hope this explains and avoids any confusion.

Funny things specialist military rifles. There always seems to be a small nucleus of people that have to fiddle to the extreme, rather than keeping rifles or leaving rifles as they were intended in the Milsurps tradition. Sadly innocent people come along to buy what they thought was A totally original rifle and try hard to establish who did what and when, as they find out they were not as advertised..................the mysteries of fiddlers and their intentions when they set out to change things!!
I find that totally original rifles whether they are battered or damaged, with provenance make good prices, for what is a good honest piece IMHO anyway.
What grips my s*** are those who knowingly sell a rifle, having changed stuff around or ADDED stuff to try to make it what it was never intended in the first place, and the only reason is to deceive! Seen so much of that.

Thanks for your comments they are well noted. The M82 performed well with the S&B on top. Anyway I agree orginality is everything. My M82 has the Kahles ZF84 back on top, although I would prefer an original Kahles ZF69. However, the M82 is still very accurate with ZF84.

Pleased to hear that you still have R31350 and it's still in the UK. Having now learnt more about its background and how Parker Hale dealt with the C3s returned from Canada I wish I'd kept it now and disposed of my other M82 ("Z" serialled), but that already had the original correct stock, ZF69 scope, etc so for me it was the obvious "keeper" of the two given the very little info I had at the time about R31350s past life. My first enquiry about serial R31350 on here in 2015 turned up very little from Gil's record search but very intriguing that your later enquiry about it brought further comment to light about it being in the middle of the Canadian C3 order range of serials.
Interesting to read about what Parker Hale did with these Canadian returned rifles as I strongly suspect that when I acquired it from a dealer in NW England it was in the same "1200TX" type spec as it left PH's refurb programme, hence the target rifle stock on it that it had when you acquired it. Not perhaps original to it's first life as a C3 for Canada but "original" as it came from Parker Hale in the second time in its life.
As you've no doubt found these are highly accurate rifles and I always find it amusing when the guys in F/TR competitions look over scratching their heads as to what this old rifle is that's giving them a run for their money!

Originality is the ultimate for collectors like ourselves. With the M82 or the rare C3 you do your best to get as close to original as possible. Parts get taken off or replaced over time - don't get hung up on this! There are still correct parts out there - price depends on rarity. As far as scopes go - I don't shoot my collectible scopes - nothing wrong with having your S&B in a spare set of mounts set up to go to the range.

Hi Ron thanks for the advice. Both my Parker Hales M82 & M85 are staying with me as long as I can enjoy them and use them occassionally.
The M82 I am going to purchase I know the stock is incorrect. Is the bolt incorrect with the scalloped handle and round bolt knob? The one on my M82 is the same as the one on my M85 with the different handle and knob. Is it possible to get the correct stock? I got the one for my M82 a few years ago. Also, I know the ZF69 on the M82 is in the spirit of what should be on the rifle, but is not in the correct serial number range and not a military issue.

Steve, OWS (Old Western Scrounger) store in the US had lots of M82 stocks a few years ago but none listed on their site currently. They do have what are described as "M81 Cadet Target" stocks showing, which are the stocks for the L81A1 single shot cadet rifle. IIRC they are the same as the M82 stocks apart from not having the magazine and floor plate cutout, which is a simple modification, and they do have the stock extension pieces on them too.Quote:

I missed your post. Yes R31350 is still in my gun cabinet with my M85. I purchased it a few years ago and managed to get the correct stock from Brian at BDL. I then took the M82 to Norman Clarke to have it properly bedded. This is where Bill Smallwood works part time, or he did at the time. I had a chat with him and he had a look over the rifle just so I could get some feedback from him. Since I got the rifle restocked I have used it occassionally and it does shoot very well out to 600 yards at Bisley. The M85 has the edge on accuracy, but both are great fun to shoot and when sitting on the range side by side draw quite a few envious glances and start off conversations.
I have purchased the M82 that started my thread and I am waiting to receive it from the owner in Germany. When received my objective is to get it back to as original as possible and will be a keeper in my collection, so another project about to start!

If you know someone in the US then it's simple to get it sent to them and re-sent on. It is a plain bit of wood so rarely interests customs people unless they have a real anti firearm attitude.Quote:

Hi xa thanks for the message I have tried the first option, but shipping firearms parts outside the US somehow sets alarm bells and my friend was not keen on taking a chance. I'll have to try another route of trying to get the stock shipped out with the correct documentation.
Parker Hale M82 Serial Number: R 22690 is at entry 626 in the PH Register comment beside it states:
"Marked as 1200 TX's and sold to Mr T. Hallam 5/11/96 from Canada as M82's originally"

Serial numbers are within the 22000 to 24000 serial number range before they were converted from 1200TX's to M82's
Did I read this correctly " 2010 Auction"? Sold "1600 Euro"? Any M82 on T Hallam list is worth the effort to put back to C3. If anybody has one of these could you check the barrel date and proof. It would confirm if it has its original barrel or been rebarrelled. Ron (Canada)

Finally got my M82 R21221 from the seller in Germany. I sent a number of photographs to Ron for his assessement of my rifle. This is as follows:
Here are my comments based on your pictures:
P1. Serial number and proofs are correct for M82/C3
P2. "308 proof" appears to be German and not applicable to M82/C3 - most likely an import requirement
P3. "A/B" date stamp - 1976 - Very exciting as this the C3 production date
P4. Front steel base correct for M82/C3. Can't make out the stamp on the barrel That is a letter C
P5. 7.62 Nato M83/C3 correct
P6. Rear steel base correct for M82/C3
P7. Bolt should be black oxide. Is the underside of the knob flat?
P8 Can read Number in barrel channel
P9 "15" is a rack number
The barrel action is M82 and on Charnwood's list. Orginally it was a C3. The stock is not correct. It's a M82 with an Anschutz front rail.
With a correct stock and Kahles ZF scope you would have a C3 - very rare - very valuable.
As you can imagine I was really excited to get Ron's assessment and I do now own a C3, well most of one. Special thanks to Ron for taking the time to review the pictures of my C3 and responding in detail.
I didn't manage to get the pictures in the same sequence as Ron's comments, but you will get the idea!

Yes this rifle features in entry 1969 in the register for the C3A1 part of the 1200TX/M82 Canadian Refurbishment Contract W8466-7EHB17/01 DATED 26-11-87 No further information.

Unfortunately I don't have a lead on the rifle but my reason for asking is that in response to a WTB request for M82 stock spacers I removed the spacers from my M82 to compare sizes with some others I had. One of the spacers on my M82 has that number on it and it looked to me like a serial number. I wonder if it was originally fitted to a C3A1 as IIRC they had wooden stocks when first supplied by PH to Canada? Shown on left in pic below.Quote:

I woukl say it was from that rifle, only because it took them three years to convert and restamp these 500 rifles its the way I would have done business to ensure each rifle got its personal service, as I know they did by those that did the conversions.;)

00114G is a good C3a1 serial number. This spacer was against the stock butt face as you can see the impression of the spacer retainer. Spacers were marked both in pencil and marker, some stamped as well. Can you show us a picture of the barrel channel (top view) - can tell you whether you have a C3 or C3a1 stock.

Just been following this old thread. Can anyone shed some light on a Parker Hale Serial No: S00442? It looks like a 1200TX or maybe an M82?
Any help would be much appreciated

Either side of that serial number are recorded and I can confirm its an M82, nothing on yours.
The others all sold to York Guns so thats a starting point if you want to try and track its life.

Sadly the lettering was the PH issue I'm afraid when it comes down to the 1200TX and the M82 specifically. Most had the R prefix and a number the S.
Speaking to three of the engineers over the years, even they seemed to have no answer for Rhyme or Reason for it!! :madsmile:

All of the "1200" and "1200 Magnum" actions which Parker-Hale sourced from Santa Barbara came serial numbered by Santa Barbara. The Magnum actions (both PH and Santa Barbara) have MAG as part of the serial number.Quote:

Agreed, it was the prefix stamping R & S that caused issues even beyond those model variants you list above, where it made more sense to keep each letter to a specific rifle and perhaps calibre IMHO.
Any information on serial C05611 available? I only have the serial, no pictures, hence I wondered what model this actually is.

Any info on R-37288? Very nice single shot 1200TX with a 1974 dated barrel. I was told it came from a former Canadian Olympic shooter (?) but I did not get a name or any more info as it came from a pawn shop. I have talked to rgg_7 as I am also in Canada, and he thinks it may be a restamped "P" based on some pictures I sent him of the receiver. I am still curious anyways.
Any info on R-23594? I have an opportunity to purchase this, it is in a target stock and I think 24" barrel, but does have the M82 Parker Hale sights/bases with the heavy rear sight base. That's all I know about it.

If the barrel on R-37228 is dated 1974 it's correct for the action. R-37228 would be near the end of the c3 serial range.Quote:

Your rifle Parker Hale M82 S/N R-23594 is recorded in entry 638 in the PH register and sold to Mr T Hallam on the 5/11/96 came from Canada and marked as an M82 originally.
Sadly nothing at all on R-37228 but would have been included within the number range of the C3 Canadian production run which went up to 38000.
PH employees did not record the rifles original serial numbers before they were C3'd which would have made many records complete for owners today and provided the rifles history and provenance.

Sorry Gil, the number on the 1200TX was R-37288. It is a really nice piece in any case, and I haven't shot it yet.
I also have a built up clip fed C prefix rifle that sits in a 1200 stock, heavy 26" barrel, replica C3 bipod/sling and Kahles Helia 3-9 that shoots really well. I only started down the rabbit hole of the 1200/M82/C3 a couple years back but I'm always looking to add new stuff to the collection! Thanks again for the information guys, I'll try and post some pics soon!

I'm looking at a Parker Hale, SN R38888.
The R is underlined. It has a 20T proof and a flat underside to the bolt knob.
The scope is a ZF69, but the number doesn't match the ring's serial.
The barrel is marked Parker Hale etc.. and TX1200.
The stock has the spacers, front rail and a floorplate and isn't from a TX1200.
I'd love to know what this is.
Sadly nothing recorded on this rifle in the Parker Hale registers. It could be one that went to Canada under the C3 project as a 1200 TX.

What's the deal with the flat underside to the bolt knob? I haven't found much onlline...
Maybe I can help however I need the following:
1. Serial number of the scope
2. Are there any numbers stamped or electro penciled anywhere on the bolt.
3. Can you describe or show a picture of the barrel proof - will be in a circle with letters like A/B or some other combination
4. Is stock walnut or beech
Note - flat bolt handle knob is a characteristic of the C3 (need to see a picture to confirm).

Parker Hale M85 S/N 00252F was completed on the 23rd of January 1987. It was a batch of 6 rifles, 4 NATO GREEN and 2 DESERT STOCKS completed on that day .
There was no scope fitted to 00252F but four did have scopes fitted.
It fired 17.9mm Group @100 yards with 10 rounds.
It was indeed fitted with a NATO GREEN stock.
It was sold to an "unknown" firearms dealer in the UK, thats all entry 8 states in the register.;)

I can confirm this rifle is on the Parker Hales list as an M82 ENTRY 609 and sold to a Mr T HALLAM of Canada on the 5/11/1996.
No further information on it I'm afraid.
