(PR911) British Enfield made L1A1 rifle fitted with an American 40mm XM148 Grenade Launcher
The rifle is part of the NFC Collection. What a magical place.

I knew about those and wanted one back in the '70s. We had to wait until the C7 A1 to get them. I never got that, why didn't we need them earlier if we needed them later? They were an excellent idea.

That sight is quite a contraption, and getting your hand behind to reach the cocking handle must have been interesting.
Used in anger our SAS on tour during the Vietnam war got creative to improve a squads destructiveness they planted a 40mm GL under the SLR combined it with a 30 round mag on the SLR which apparently did the job.

The mag is of course from the L4 series and they worked beautifully, I had a couple myself for use.

My dad always said the best part of being the C2 gunner was the 30rd mags and half the time they wouldn't give him the C2 but he would still have the 30rd mags on him for use in the C1.Quote:

We had the M203 clamped and wired to the M16A1. An Airborne Armorer's nightmare as every time the guys jumped them, they came loose. The M4 cured all of that. Even better, the HK 40mm on the British SFW is solid as a rock. I was impressed when I examined one at Warminster many years ago.

There is no such thing as "Overkill".
The 30 round magazines were a relatively 'loose' fit and the weight of the magazine and extra 10 rounds caused some deforming of the magazine. I base this on hundreds of rounds I fired with an R1, in one 30 round magazine manufactured in South Africa [speculative manufacturing for the 7,62 Bren, which the SADF continued using with 20 round magazines]. The cartridges moved inside the magazine denting the front of the magazine, causing the bullets to catch in the dents so formed, causing failure to feed. Small hammer solved that problem but it kept recurring.
The weight of the magazine in movement, including shooting, increased wear, causing a looser fit, etc.
Actually the XM148 Grenade Launcher. There was a number of problems with launcher. It was used until the better designed M203 came out.
Fjruplle is dead right. The best one of all was the M203. Never saw one fail, never went wrong that wasn't a simple fix. The phrase '.....if it ain't broke, don't fix it....' was invented for the M203 for sure...........
Bit more of a weapons break down carried by our SAS whilst on operations in VN with a heavily mod'ed SLR second from top no doubt they could personalise their weapons platform to personal preference as why traipse around a jungle with a 3 foot pole when you can have a 2 foot pole doing the same thing.
The have a heavily modified M-60 I'll put that up at a later.
