Anyone Coyote hunt with the carbine?

Plan to hunt anything this fall with a carbine?
I only hunt deer with a muzzle loader locally.
Temps are warmer than usual here so I'm going to try Coyotes.

The ducks from upriver that usually hang around the city park uptown have dropped down and hanging behind our place. Plus the migrating Geese are feeding heavy a few hundred yards across the river on the corn. Between the two they've drawn the attention of the Coyotes who have been really active here. I can hunt them from this side but I also own a good size section across the river. We've lived here since 1985 and have never heard and seen so many coyotes.
Hearing a Alpha that sounds like it's from a movie and scattered calls until they pack up. Hear them just about every night with a window or two partly open.
Rivers been shallow for quite awhile and I'm finding piles of duck feathers on both sides.
Starting to leaf blow the backyard now and finding Coyote scat in a fenced yard.
Worth a shot its just a 125~ yard walk.

I think with a soft point 110 gr it should do wonders. I used to load a 30 cal lead GC bullet, 120 gr. I used a round nose top punch to take the point off and it gave excellent striking power.

We've had warmer weather too, and not much rain at all. Have been at this location since 1979 and Coyotes are all over the place compared to other years. See them crossing the roads from orchard to orchard or heading out of our property and across the RR tracks into a wooded area. They make quite a racket in the evening when they've caught something. Lots of cats have gone missing recently - I've got a barn cat that I feed over at the adjoining place and been worried about losing her to them. Also, have seen duck feathers along the creek that runs through our property. I've never "opened up" on any of them with anything yet, though. - Bob

Soon after I posted this last night I was putting my boots on out in the garage and could hear the ducks and the geese beyond them. I hadn't heard any scattered coyotes far off, which I still often do even when the ducks and geese are noisy. When I was about half way back it sounded like all H3ll broke loose. By the time I covered the other 50~yards I couldn't hear anymore water splashing, ducks or geese. But I could hear the underbrush cracking and popping. I stood at the gate looking down on the river and the low land across it with my night vision scanning for about 15 minutes, not seeing anything. The sounds were coming from the 1'0 clock from me, back maybe 30' in the high grass and twisted dead brush that gets deposited from high water. Current flows from my right to left and in this spot when the water level is low a finger comes out pointing down river to the left. Above the finger the water backs in there like a small bay that the ducks often gather in to get out of the current. Surrounding this 'Bay' is this tall grass up to 6'. With the bank across the river only being about 3' high and the tip of this 'Bay' maybe 8-10' across a Coyote could easily jump across it. It's a perfect choke point and not far from where I found the feathers.

After cutting, clearing some lanes the other day I ran out of time to clear off the leaves and sticks from the dock, stairs and around the gate. So I didn't want to spook anything by opening the gate. I stayed scanning another 1/2 hour which was pretty much quiet now. Then while scanning one lane where I had zig zagged those reflective tags I had something at the long end of it that was walking away that would block the reflector from side to side as it moved away from me. Couldn't tell if it was a deer or coyote. I staggered them in height but never caught eyeball reflections to tell how tall, or antlers that shine on my night visions. So back to the garage and sure enough while pulling my boots off I hear the Alpha right out back........ close. In less than 6 or 7 minutes I heard others from the pack calling back. Came in and the Wife asked me if I heard that? Spent the next hour with a cup of coffee trying to hold my night vision up to my spotting scope on the dinning room table looking out back. It was after Midnight before they split up and moved deep enough in the woods that we could barely hear them.

Today nearly 80 here, so I cleared the leaves from the steps, dock, back gate and oiled the gate hinges.
Coyotes had scored last night. Right where I heard the noise in the brush. You could see some feathers, but mostly signs of multiple animals in what looked like Circling of the Attack / Kill site.

Time for a NVG on your carbine.

I have taken many slightly smaller critters with the carbine. I have no doubt that even a FMJ would put it down. If it hits a bone it will open him up.

They are cat-killers and have been known to clean-out the neighborhood feline population. Only problem with killing one is their intelligence. Can smell you a mile away and maybe hear you breath not much closer than that.

+1 BAR. Soft point is your answer. Like Floyd said, FMJ would do it but personally I think a soft point would ensure it

Don't bow hunt anymore and really was not very good at it when I did, this was likely just very lucky with a stupid coyote.

Good job Wayne! I have had one creeping in on my deer food plot in broad daylight. He is not camera shy but I am yet to catch him when I am in the tree stand.

Got this picture on my food plot camera years ago. A case of safety in numbers or just don't be the slowest turkey?

Oh yes….I have turkey, coon, squirrels, crows, bobcats and birds. I am a practical soup-kitchen for animals.

I have taken a carbine coyote hunting several times with soft points but unfortunately they didn't cooperate. A few years ago turkey hunting I had one try and swipe my decoy, from about 10ft realized something was amiss and retreated.

The PPU soft points are pretty accurate in both my carbines, and by this I mean they can ring a 10 inch gong at 100yds with some consistency.

I never saw any shortfall with carbine ammo, at least the stuff I loaded. I loaded lead GC and the strike at 200 on steel was resounding. All I had to do was hit it...

LOL. Either way, I have noticed that carbine accuracy has little to do with ammo, when compared to the overall fitup of the stock.

Lol, yes I meant the coyotes didn't cooperate... Have a few different makes of SP, usually I take Israeli surplus but it all shoots just as well as FMJ.

It's been record breaking high temperatures here but heavy winds and rain. So I screwed down a pop up hunting blind on the dock. I have to admit a Carbine is handy in size in a pop up. Lots of leaves have dropped giving me a deeper view across river. Since the heavy winds I haven't heard any coyotes or geese. Neighbor told me they harvested the corn to the north where the geese were hanging out. Maybe they moved on? usually they'll hang around longer and feed in the stubble. Up river at the city park they had a festival that drew the ducks up that way for free treats. Still about a dozen hanging back here. One of my sighting lanes is tangled from the domino effect from a few snags blowing down. There are countless standing dead snags back there that would actually make it pretty dangerous if you were to let a few boys loose to run around in. Leaves are covering the sandy ground around the finger point so I can't see any fresh sign unless I cross the river which I don't want to disturb. I'm hunting about 3hr shifts sometimes both am and pm. Sometimes just am or pm depending on whats going on. Seems I've seen about everything but coyotes. The Deer are all over using that tall grass for bedding. Seeing Deer is common we often have them in our fenced yard wasting the Wife's plants. I think 11 is the record. The Deer I'm seeing are comfy, not acting like coyotes are around. I'll keep poking at it until it gets closer to our firearms deer opener 11-15.

But I did have something odd brought to my attention from a lady neighbor 3 doors down. At the edge of her front yard they found a large Rabbits rear leg that looked ripped from the hip joint. I looked around and couldn't find any fur or what would look like the kill site. This was a large leg like you'd get from a breeder. She also lives on the river and behind her place is a developing log jam that I can see about 1/2 of when in the pop up.

Any ideas? Coyote or Fox? No one I know of has a large dog in our area.

I frequently get such things in my yard - usually in the form of squirrels, sometimes rabbits. I have a very large, tall old growth red oak and two large silver maples in the back yard. We have a lot of hawks in the area, even a few eagles. They love to bring their kill to the large boughs of my trees to eat up high. They inevitably drop some or all of the carcass, but aren't too keen on going to ground to retrieve it. I've been tempted to make a platform high in the oak to encourage a hawk or owl to make a home. They seem to be the only thing that keeps the tree rats in check. We have a pair of bald eagles that nest in a park right next to a busy regional airport less than a mile away, and have returned every year for over a decade. I'm afraid they or their offspring would move in to my backyard if I made it welcoming. The last thing I need is an army of fish and game bureaucrats monitoring my back yard.

No eagles around here to speak of. Maybe 10 years back one was spotted and made the local news. Thing about this Rabbit leg is that it was found near her driveway. She had put the trash out before dark and it wasn't there. Next morning before heading to work she was adding a small bag to the garbage and seen the rear leg just a couple feet from her dumpster. So it showed up at night. I'm not ruling out a Big Hawk that could have dropped it elsewhere and something dragged it here. But at the size of the leg that had to of been one big Azz Hawk. We've had our share of Hawks hit the morning doves using our bird feeders, sometimes hearing the doves 'Plump' in to the patio glass. The kill was fresh and I should of got a picture even if just to show how the bone was crushed to get to the marrow.

Yesterday after I posted above I rode down and mowed the vacant double lot I own which is next door to her place. While looking around the riverbank I found 3 separate Chicken feather piles. That partial log jam is to the left behind the ladies house. The banks are too steep to walk down to look around.
Only on this side of our road can you own farm animals because it's a different township. I'll have to ask my neighbor next door Ole Bill when I see him who might own chickens.

Got excited this morning hunting as a nose slooowly started poking thru the high grass as the ducks were close to the bank. Kept poking thru until I could see it was a wet mid size Doe that came down in to the water about knee deep for a drink. Others followed, some fed on the acorns others laid out in the sun on the grass. This is actually the best time to be Pike fishing, but I'll stick with this a bit longer.

Don't let size dissuade the possibility. I've seen an entire, very fat, squirrel carried off in daylight by a rather small red tail hawk. Landed on it with some force. I was not 20 yards away working in the yard and it startled me almost as much as it did the squirrel. He worked the talons in for half a minute until the squirming slowed, then worked real hard to get up to the big branch right next to my back porch. I slowly pulled out my phone and took a few picks. As I manuvered closer to get a better shot with fewer leaves in the way, it spooked and flew off with his quarry. He struggle for altitude with such a large squirrel, but by the time he was maybe 40ft off the ground he gave up and let go. It was a sight to behold the damage that was done with just a minutes work of his talons.
Most of our yard rabbits are only out at night or twilight, surprisingly quite tame. Then again I am in the burbs. I catch foxes almost every night on my cameras. And if I step out to the porch for a late nightcap, I will often hear their death scream. If only they put a bigger dent in the population, I might have a cabbage survive to make it to the dinner table. I'll try to dig for my yard-hawk pictures. Remarkable birds - any bird of prey for that matter.

Just a follow up so I don't leave anyone hanging that was following this,

I pulled back trying to hunt Coyote with no luck. Hadn't heard any close since the Bow hunters hit the woods. Finally ran in to Ole Bill my neighbor and found out it's actually his Daughter well down the street that has Chickens. They've had problems with Fox prying their way in to the coops. Said they'd lost 6 before they wrapped it in mesh fence over the chicken wire.
Woods are busy with the Firearms Deer hunters now. My property is posted..... but good luck with that. I talked to a group one evening and just warned against shooting over the high southern banks (our side) so they wouldn't hit my boats and boat house/shop. They had permission from 1 family member of the group that owns the section that borders my section across the river to the North. They had no idea of the property lines, so they said.... But I have it posted. And this is the same Family that has always had me watch the property for them. I don't plan to hunt but told them I'd be out so don't crowd the riverbanks. They seemed like pretty good people, I just worry about when 'Buck Fever' hits. Seen some stupid Sh!t when some hunters see those horns. They did ask for permission to track if they hit one and it came on my north section. To which I agreed to for some Jerky ;)

In 1989, I took a Blacktail deer with an M1 Carbine, at 97 long paces, with a single heart/lung shot (R-P 110 grain JSP). It jumped once (about for 30 feet!) when hit, and fell over dead right there. Heck of an exit hole on the opposite side.

Hornady makes their "Critical Defense" line for the M1 Carbine. It has a reliable expanding 110 Grain Flex Tip bullet at about 2020 PFS from a carbine. I use one of my carbines as my Home Defensive carbine with the critical defense in the mag in the weapon. The two mags in the stock pouch are R-P110 JSPs and R-P110 FMJs. That would be a good coyote load, too.

At close range it's like getting hit with a 357 magnum. That soft point probably mushroomed to at least 45 caliber by the time it came out.

On the other hand at 200 yards against heavy Chinese winter gear not so good.

Still really not convinced or a fan of the "Flex Tip" ammo. Have shot a number of deer with a 450 bushmaster with their flex tip ammo with it just punching through (having to track farther than I care to), changed to Hornady's soft point and got great (drop dead) results. As far as the carbine "critical defense" it shoots great in most of my carbines but will hang up in more than a few.
