Using Airsoft for Firearm Training | The Art of Manliness
Many years ago...1981 I think, we were training a recruit platoon. When we came to the stalking excersie the observers were issued Red Ryder BB guns. The stalking troops were wearing eye protection so they would get shot if spotted. Regular Red Ryder guns from the store...
Airsoft weapons make fantastic training tools. Cheaper than Simunitions while maintaining weight, size and feel. Prior to airsoft was paint ball guns. They were great but packed the real feel of a weapon.
Side note: don't paint ball train with Navy SEALs. They freeze the paint balls and set the guns on WOT! Man they hurt!!!:lol:
Let me rephrase that slightly, seeing as I once used both BB guns and paintball guns in training. I'm 72, long retired, and no longer run around the woods (or in buildings) hunting people in training, so I only shoot and collect live firearms and have no use for a toy regardless it's value to training.
I unfortunately missed those, have a few in my cartridge collection from the ones left in my desk drawer in the Small Arms School. The new Joint Task Force used them but I didn't get more than reports from guys on them. I think they're all out of the system now.
There is no cheating in combat, there are only winners and losers.

Red Ryder BB guns (and goggles) in "Quick Fire" training (instinctive shooting) 1970 and paintball guns during woodland training years later. It was essentially unauthorized scout unit training with self provided paintball guns. Make sure you wear your worst set of BDU's. And I still have no use for an airsoft replica of anything. If not live I don't need/want it.
