FWIW: On my '44 NPM ( the one I showed here) I have a punch mark right in the Middle of the Nose of the Stock and the Proof Stamp . The guy I bought it from who bought it from CMP told me exactly that the punch mark was proof that the Barrel was originated for NPM. It's halfway down between the Proof Mark (P) and the nose of the Stock. I also thought it was a harden test punch mark just like the one before the Dovetail starts to curve up behind the bolt. I still been looking for that information.
