    M16 Series USGI build kit

Someday I wanted to build an Early M16A1 or M16A2 out of Surplus USGI parts. Are there any good kits out there that I should look at? I don't mind if the gear is a little banged up I know its surplus, and that just gives it a story to me!

These guys have them. They're probably about what you seek too... Colt M16A1 Parts Kit

Quite a price spike. Glad I did not wait.

That was without barrels too from what I saw...

I was at a show this weekend and Sarco had A2 kits for $700, I think they came with a barrel. It was boxed so I didn't look at it closely, may have been a one off deal. I can't recall if they had more when I was last in their store. May be worth giving them a phone call and asking what they have. What a Country is way high on that kit, a local store had A1 kits like that for $450 and they sold real slow to where they wound up liquidating them; they were rough. Might be some floating around on gunbroker.

Edit: As for kits with no barrels, Brownells currently has a selection. I may swap the barrel I put on my build with one of their barrels, as mine has an F-height FSB (yes they are out there for pencil barrels, no clue why) and it's a little detail that bugs me. When I bought mine it was early October and I had to take what I could get.

They probably are guessing people want a cherry barrel, and the twist varies like the color of the sky...so they just leave it. Maybe they just don't have them...

Not sure where the market is on retro ARs. There were several sources for kits a year or so ago but not so much any more. At that time the barrels and odd bits along with the retro lowers were available if you were patient. Now Brownells has the Nodak lowers (and uppers) barrels. and flat delta rings.
Colt & Troy have come out with their retro models for boat loads of cash. I would assume large companies would examine the market before introducing a new product. Guess we will see.

It's more likely that the kits are recent imports less the barrels and bolts since they are banned from importation.

I forgot about that. Makes sense.

You still get the bolts. But the barrels are a no go... in many kits you are probably not missing anything given I'd suspect most are heavily shot out, but I'd rather have it in my hand and make that decision for myself. Occasionally used Colts come up. Just need to be willing to wait.
