Alexander Henry - an inventory of surviving rifles

The 4th of June 2018 is the 200th anniversary of Alexander Henry’s birth. To mark this, as his great great grandson, I’d like to create an “inventory” of his rifles and shotguns, so that we can have an idea of how many are still in existence. I realise this will never be complete, and out of date as soon as it is created!

Donald Dallas’ book “Alexander Henry Rifle Maker” lists all serial numbers from 120 (in 1852) to 8545. I’m primarily interested in the serial numbers up until his death, at approximately 7000 or so.

If you own one – and you’re interested in contributing … please let me know
    • the serial number
    • some idea of where you live (country or city or post/ZIP code)
    • anything especially interesting about the gun or its history

Please reply by Direct, or Private Message (DM or PM) or to
Alex henry rifles (one word) at gmail dot com

Don’t give me your name if you don’t want to, nor your address – no need for it. I will store your forum moniker, and which forum.

I will not share information with anyone – this is purely for my interest and research.

I will be putting this message up on other forums.

In time, I’ll map the data on a world map (anonymity still totally preserved) using something like BatchGeo.

I will also trawl through auction sites to see what they have sold in the past.

If you know Alexander Henry owners, who probably don’t access this forum, please let them know too!

I hope this will be very successful – it will be very interesting!

    Thanks in anticipation!

Do you have any information on Alex Martin rifles?
Any information on how the management of the company changed after the amalgamation with Alex Martin in 1902?

Lee ... as a direct descendant, I really only took research as far as the end of Alex Henry Ltd., and that's where my interest ceased, so I don't think I can help you.

The transfer from Alex Henry, at his death, to Alex Henry Ltd wasn't exactly glorious in itself.

    Sorry !

    Alexander Henry's 200th birthday is 4th June - 3 and a bit weeks away ...

I'm still getting info on existing rifles and shotguns made in Edinburgh, but it's slowed a bit now.

    Any more welcome though !

by random chance i ended up in the palm beach rsl (returned servicemans league) club last night, in sydney, australia.
in a display cabinet was, what i later worked out to be, a alexander henry m1871 nsw contract short rifle/carbine. (labelled as a 1877 mkII martini henry. caliber .577 rimmed)

sorry i couldn't get any further details and cannot work out how to upload the one blury picture i took from my phone.
