Gas cylinder 2.5M - correct one?

Scott Duff's book is a little vague for me on recognizing a gas cylinder correct for a Feb '44 ser # 2.599 M SA rifle. It seems like the only identifying characteristics are no number, flat on top of rear ring and wide sight platform. Is that correct?

BTW, I've cleaned the stock, now some steel wool and tung oil and call it done.

I believe a 2-44 Garand would have a saw-cut gas cylinder.

Did they do that at the factory or in the field or both? Would that be a straight or diagonal cut?

The straight (90' and there were two: the earlier .050" and later .035) cut predated the diagonal cut(mid '44), but by '44 they were only using the cut cylinders if there was excessive play found in rebuild. -mostly Duff-

So for Feb '44 it would be a straight .035 cut or .050?

Scott,

Before we get too far along here, sawcut gas cylinders were not part of original new built assembly, they are strictly field rebuilt and overhaul items.

By that time it would be the thinner .035 cut.
