My Inland #882766 M1 Carbine

I recently purchased an Inland #882766 M1 Carbine. I think it is pretty much original except the Type V slide. I think it needs a Type IV slide based on Riesch's book. It is a Saginaw built Inland receiver with a SG stamped on the side. Should I swap the slide to a type IV or could the Type V be correct?

Welcome to the site. I sure would like to see the insides of this carbine. Looks genuine to me. I would leave it as is.

Thanks Bill! I am new to the carbine. I am getting conflicting info on the slide. I have only had it apart once. Owner told me it was original except the slide was late. Rifle came from Pa. and I bought it here locally. Only part in question seems to be the slide.

That doesn't look like a type V slide to me. The type V has a very steep angle where yours looks slight. Take a shot from the top looking at the slide.

Looking at this photo link I think mine is a type V.

The slide still could be original. Like I said on the cmp site unless it has the M2 cut or the 7160091 number on the bottom itcould be original. I can't give you a copy of CCNL# 346 due to it being copywritten, but your serial is well within the excepted range for the later cam cut slides on the SG made Inland receivers. My 977,xxx Inland made receiver with a 9-43 barrel also has the later cam angle withoutt the numbers on the bottom and it is marked PI on the inside. The dwell issue I talked about on the cmp site could still be on yours, but we could walk you through checking that if you are still worried. Some of the guys here could give you more detailed numbers of the top of their head, but I can't because I'm not at home right now to get the info. Please don't change out that slide unless it can be proven to be to late for your carbine.

Thanks Dave. I did a goggle search about the slide and it took me to some links on this site. Some which say the later slide could be correct on SG made Inland recievers.

CCNL#339 has an SG subcontracted Inland receiver that's 20k earlier than yours and it has the L-379 slide. Carbine is a documented bringback.

A 1985 newsletter has another SG subcontracted receiver a few thousand later than the one above that has the early slide - and it has a later barrel date! (10-43). Looks like a case can be made that yours is in the transistion.

What is your barrel date and is the SG large or small?

I wouldnt worry about the slide, but try to stop the pitting on the barrel from getting worse with an oil coating and cleaning, get an early swivel..

I know. Sadly that is the only negative of the rifle. Supposedly that part wasn't covered in cosmoline. The barrell is nice and clean however. How would you clean it safely? What oil coating? I picked up an early swivel and II oiler. If my L739 Type V slide is correct should it only have PI on it? I am joining CC soon. Sounds like I need issues 339, 346. Any others for my carbine?

That is a very sweet looking carbine! If I knew it was here, I'd have never left it get out of PA!! :lol:

I used to be in Greer every Labor Day weekend for the annual Roadster Homecoming at the BMW factory. I bet it's quiet now without 700+ roadsters clogging the roads.

The barrell says 43 for sure. The month is tough to read with the pitting. I can't remember if the SG is large or small. I've only had it apart once.

LOL. The previous owner is a Garand guy. Only had two carbines this being one of them. He bought it from a guy in PA who he knew had good quality pieces. Sounds like I didn't do bad for $950. :)

I use REM OIL, and a good gun cloth, just clean it, keep it oiled...I think issue 345, or 346 is correct, Im waiting for it from Roger now...

With all of the 'put-together', refinished, etc carbines I've been seeing for sale lately, it's very nice to see one that looks honest and real.

Looking forward to seeing how this comes out, but I'd already think long and hard before contemplating replacing anything.
I hope you do join the CC and fill out a detailed data sheet on this one.

Thanks! I am going to join the CC and request the back issues for my rifle. I am not planning on replacing anything right now. I have a nice 3.8 SA M1 Garand too. I am jmark on the CMP forums as well. I'll need help filling out a data sheet.

You may want to *gently* remove the active corrosion. I have had very good luck with this product and KROIL.

I have used this on some finely blued Colts with surface rust with great results.

Dave, if you get a chance shot me a scan of your data sheet. Several sources at milsurps.com agree with you that my carbine is correct with the L379. I will get those older CCNL's soon as possible. Thanks for your help. My email address is jmark350z@gmail.com.

Mine came today

I'll give you a tip on getting that stuff off without removing the finish; I get my hads on a small piece of velcro pad. It is soft and has no metal. The ugly stuff is a mixture of old grease, oil and rust. Most of it wipes or scrubs off. Just go slow and carefully. Use it with any light oil and it will remove surface rust and keep it from returning. I had an M1 garand Greek return that had been steam cleaned by CMP and it got surface rust all over and under the sight cover and I was really ****ed since it was an almost new weapon. That little pad took it all off and it never returned. Here's a photo of it AFTER I saved it. Didn't disturb the original finish at all.

Got my newsletter today. I'll be ordering the back issues too. Impressive info.

Yes serial number cards. My bad. After reading #363 I think my carbine has the increased dwell (if I am I understand the newsletter correctly). Also it is cool that one of the tech editors Ron Wellman is located close by in Rock Hill SC. Is Ron on the forum?

Welcome and you have a very nice carbine. You came to the right place for info. I must be old fashion, I still use 0000 steel wool and gun oil.

Back issues came today. Great service. Lots of info to check out!

I joined near the end of December and few days after I sent in my application Roger Fish sent me an email and offered me two options -

1) Just begin with the January newsletter when it came out and go on from there, or
2) Rejoin in January for 2011 and he'd send me all of the 2010 newsletters.

Roger is a very nice and personable gentleman, and it was thoughtful to contact a new member to offer the opportunity to receive the 2010 newsletters.
Volunteer work such as this mostly a thankless endeavor, and it was nice to see that kind of personal dedication.

I received all of the back 2010 newsletters yesterday and they're indeed impressive.
Each contains much more information than I expected and they're a good quality printing.

Now I need to come up with some sort of binder or something. I'm very impressed with the whole organization.
Next on the agenda will be to buy all the back issues! (And of course fill out some data sheets)
