Personally I would use a actual Vented Gas Screw
i have one of these. i got it to replace the shuster i had, i didnt liek the idea of always having to tweak the gas nut to find the sweet spot
No offense intended but your comment pretty much sums up the reason I would use the vented plug.
You said you had to adjust the vented plug to find the sweet spot
The other plug is not vented, only has a larger port area. How can one size fits all possibly work?? By what you just said, it cant
I was alittle undecided on these before until a unbiased gun builder told me of his experience with them. He tried it but afterwards will only use Schuster in his builds
I tryed it out this weekend and it seemed to work well, I like the way the action cycled, with the ammuntion I was using it seemed smoother than with the standard gas plug and HXP 73. I was using hornady custom 150 SP. I think when it comes to the HXP ammo I'll stick to the factory plug. I see your point Orlando the vented plug sounds to have some advantages. I think the schuster gas plug will be a future investment. I'm satisfied with the results thus far from the ported plug though, and for a novice like myself sometimes the less I have to fool with, the more I can focus on improving my shooting overall. I guess only time will tell if the commercial ammo is doing any harm. Thanks for the input all- Eric
I'm a little confused Orlando. What part of the ported design is confusing. Thankfully the laws of physics apply everywhere including web forums. If you increase the volume of a space and inject a fix amount of gas the pressure must decrease when compared against a small volume (ie. USGI plug). The gas laws has been around since the 1800's. After three years of testing the plug and measuring its performance I would hope all the data I've provided would be enough. If not, what additional information would you need to see? I'd also ask you to expand upon your comments about the unbiased gun builder and his experience. I've yet to receive any negative feedback on the product with many hundreds in use over the past several years. What specifically was the problem he had? If he's unhappy with the product please have him contact me. I'll be glad to buy it back from him and install it on the new Garand I'm building right now.
I'm also very curious as to what people do as the vents foul on the vented plugs and the pressures spikes. Do you reset the plug every 50 to 100 rounds fired?
Eric
Eric, Its just my opinion. I just prefer a vented plug and no I dont have issues with them fouling.
I totally respect anyone's choice to go with the vented design. I spent a couple years myself playing with one before I came up with the port design. I hadn't realized it at the time but the Italians did something similar on the BM59 gas plug.
Eric
Yes they are very similar to the BM59. A well know builder of the BM59 clone drills a small hole in the that screw to release gas and slow them down some as they are still rather violent cycling
Bumping this old thread . . . I'm betting time has shown that the vented gas port has indeed proven it's worth. I've been using one now for several years and it's a simple modification to allow the use of commercial ammo without any issues.
I've had a vented gas plug for several years now. Recently I ordered the 'ported' plug from GarandGear. I'm happy with the ported plug. Part of me wants to rig a strain gauge somehow and use my PressureTrace to watch what's happening with the 'ported' vs. vented gas plug in some recent handloads I made with Lapua D-46s over AA-4350, but I don't think I'm going to do that. The data on the GarandGear website addresses enough of a range of factory ammo that I'm not terribly concerned about the rifle with these handloads. I _am_ a bit concerned about my shoulder, as it is not what it was since I hurt it, but that's another matter. :-)
I just picked up one of the GarandGear plugs myself. It seems to do the trick just fine!
