Personally I would use a actual Vented Gas Screw
i have one of these. i got it to replace the shuster i had, i didnt liek the idea of always having to tweak the gas nut to find the sweet spot

I was alittle undecided on these before until a unbiased gun builder told me of his experience with them. He tried it but afterwards will only use Schuster in his builds
I tryed it out this weekend and it seemed to work well, I like the way the action cycled, with the ammuntion I was using it seemed smoother than with the standard gas plug and HXP 73. I was using hornady custom 150 SP. I think when it comes to the HXP ammo I'll stick to the factory plug. I see your point Orlando the vented plug sounds to have some advantages. I think the schuster gas plug will be a future investment. I'm satisfied with the results thus far from the ported plug though, and for a novice like myself sometimes the less I have to fool with, the more I can focus on improving my shooting overall. I guess only time will tell if the commercial ammo is doing any harm. Thanks for the input all- Eric
I'm a little confused Orlando. What part of the ported design is confusing. Thankfully the laws of physics apply everywhere including web forums. If you increase the volume of a space and inject a fix amount of gas the pressure must decrease when compared against a small volume (ie. USGI plug). The gas laws has been around since the 1800's. After three years of testing the plug and measuring its performance I would hope all the data I've provided would be enough. If not, what additional information would you need to see? I'm also very curious as to what people do as the vents foul on the vented plugs and the pressures spikes. Do you reset the plug every 50 to 100 rounds fired?

Eric, Its just my opinion. I just prefer a vented plug and no I dont have issues with them fouling.
I totally respect anyone's choice to go with the vented design. I spent a couple years myself playing with one before I came up with the port design. I hadn't realized it at the time but the Italians did something similar on the BM59 gas plug.

Yes they are very similar to the BM59. A well know builder of the BM59 clone drills a small hole in the that screw to release gas and slow them down some as they are still rather violent cycling
Bumping this old thread . . . I'm betting time has shown that the vented gas port has indeed proven it's worth. I've been using one now for several years and it's a simple modification to allow the use of commercial ammo without any issues.

I just picked up one of the GarandGear plugs myself. It seems to do the trick just fine!
