I'm sure this question is gonna give me away as a newbie, but, I gotta start learning about these things since I was given a K98 last night for a Christmas present, yeah I know, great gift. Anyhow, "What is the hole thru the stock used for"? And, "What is the hole thru the trigger guard just forward of the trigger used for"? By the way, "Merry Christmas" :).
Welcome to the forum. The hole through the trigger guard is for a sling swivel, the one through the stock is for disassembling the bolt.
Disassembling the bolt? My, I'll need to see how that's done. Perhaps I can find a video of that. I'm looking for the right ammo online right now. Getting this rifle as a present last night has filled my morning with research, which I don't mind at all. And thank you browningautorifle for responding to my post so quickly.Quote:

The hole in the stock was also for the locking rod that secured the rifles in the wall racks in the barracks.

We go round and round with this one...but it never did make sense. I believe it to be a rumor, just a story that I never heard until the internet came forth. The rod would be miniscule and a locking rack would make far more sense in every way. To lock a group of rifles you'd need a rod umpteen feet long, that would be susceptible to bending and then would never fit.Quote:

A rod would not have worked in the barracks wall racks used in WH garrisons. The wall rack is set into the wall, the rifles are placed into the rack butt down into a canted well, and leaned back to the wall. There would be no room to insert any stiff rod.
I've been trying to figure out a picture in my head of how this locking system could have looked and worked, if it actually existed. I was wondering rather than a long rod running through all the butt holes locking them to the rack if each individual rifle could have been locked to the rack by way of the butt hole, independently of all the other rifles in the rack? Each rifle would then require some sort of special lock/hasp with it's individual key, presumably.
Save the conjecture and just search for a German barracks rifle rack for the K98. You'll see they're set back like described above. No rods through the butt. This is exactly how these rumors start. Hunt through the internet and on all forums this is exactly the same answer. No rod through the butt.Quote:
