    I wonder if HK went ahead and marked the receiver A3 to differencate the slightly modified receiver build from the original Enfield and Nottingham made examples?

    A week or two ago I came into possession of a bunch more EX1 parts that had been hiding out at my favorite surplus yard. In one bag was about 35 charging handles. About 33 were the phonelic knob, with some chipped and a few broken off, but there were two of them that had what seemed like an aluminum knob. Perhaps the CF bought parts from FN later to keep supporting these rifles, and that was what FN was making by then.
