Carcano cavalry carbine, 6.5 and 7.65 fixed rear sight interchangable?

Imgur: The magic of the Internet

Bubba hacked up the fixed rear sight on this rifle in order to install a ghost ring sight, and then poorly drilled the mounting holes before stripping them out. The rifle is now unusable.

The 6.5 marked rear sight is out of stock everywhere, but I managed to find a 7.65 marked rear sight. Can anyone tell me whether there is a significant difference between the two parts? They look identical to me.

I'd also appreciate any tips on how to replace the part. It appears that the stock and FSB need to come off. How is the rear sight block removed?

I wouldn't mix them up. It says 7.35 right on it and that indicates the caliber of the rifle. You will know it's 6.5 but the next guy down the road will assume it's 7.35. The V-notch might be a bit different because of the different trajectory and finally, 7.35 rifles often used old barrels that were rebored. Barrel dimensions may not be the same.

The plan is to pick up some letter/number punches, cross out 7.65, and stamp 6.5 onto it for exactly that reason.

If the 7.65 guns are rebores than there shouldn't be any reason the outside of the barrel would be different. It doesn't seem like I have much of a choice, though, since 6.5 sights appear to be extinct everywhere.

They aren't rebored M38 barrels, that's the problem. They are rebored 91 barrels that have been shortened. They may or may not be the same size at the location of the rear sight.
