The relative that gave this carbine to my Dad was living between Las Cruces and Old Mesilla at the time.
A relative who lived in New Mexico gave this carbine to my father back in the late 1930s.

Thanks Badger.
I use a Canon PowerShot A70 to make my photos.
I picked this one up about 13 years ago at a gun show near Atlanta Ga.
I know the sling needs to be turned over, its much easier to photograph the way it was pictured in the posting.
Thanks,
Mike,
My refurbished No.5 is the only one I have come across. :dunno:
Someone with more knowledge than I will have to answer your questions.
You're quite welcome Gunner: that is also the main reason I joined this forum.
Hi Gunner,
The * on a No.4 means just what you said.
In the case of the P-14 the mum like stamping on the bolt, receiver and barrel means that the rifle now meets the P-14 Mk I* specifications...

Thanks Steve, I suspected that it was either 1943 or early 1944 since my 11C series is dated 1942.

Check the third photo in the above post I made on 8-21. Is that what you are suggesting? I called the knox form the "barrel shank" in my posting.
Could be. Its definately not a milled band that would have been on a 1903 of this vintage.
Yep, $29.95 is what I paid for mine. Enfields and Mosin Nagants were going for between $15 and $20 and I believe K98s were in the range of $50 along with O3s and 03A3s. The last three were popular...
You're probably correct. From what I've read elsewhere the timing was right for when I bought mine.
Thats a beauty
Yep, same price. I also got a DCM Colt 1911A1 for that princely sum, but I sold it since I already had a 1911 and a blued 1911A1 (both Colts). I still have them but I kick myself regularly for...
Would it make sense that my carbine has the San Antonio proof mark and the Red River Army Arsenal rebuild mark?

You know, the imprint on that U does look a might fresh.
I can't give you an answer as to why the P is in a square instead of a circle but my Underwood M1 Carbine has the same mark:

Hi JohnMOhio,
Sounds like you received a nice one too. I'm still puzzled about why the clerk that filled out the form for mine didn't look closely at the receiver and write the correct...
Thanks for the info and the correction on the build date - Sept. '43 puts it closer to the barrel date. May I ask where you got your information? I used a list of s/n with dates that were posted on...

John,
Thanks for all the great info. I've often wondered if Betty's significant other suffered any disciplinary action for abusing his rifle. :slap:
Sure wish I knew more of the history of...
