Seems way high to me too, but I'm cheap.
That guy is a shyster, little or nothing is correct with those auctions.
Try Fred's. He has some beautiful presentation grade walnut and "Big Red" birch.
Fred's M14 Stocks
Good Luck!
I believe JOEW is correct on the rebuild data.
IIRC, the last time the CMP had enough IHC service grades to sell was about 3-4 years ago. They cost $750 and I was one of the lucky 75 to get...
It could be worth from $350 to $3000 depending on the condition and how original it is There are hundreds of variables. Good quality pictures would be a start, post them for people to see. ...
Try Turner, either direct or from the CMP.
My opinion is $200 less for the import mark if it is unobtrusive.
If substantially original, that would not be a bad price, parted out it would be worth more. If it needs a flushnut besides a stock, I would guess you are looking at about $3k total. That might be...
I believe LMR barrels are found throughout HRA production.
The 3/8 DAS seems a little early but some original late rifles may have been found with them. IHCFAN (Wayne) would be a great resource...
$650 is cheap for any nice Garand.
Where are the pics???
IMHO, your 4.72 did not come with a SA op rod. The correct HRA one should not be hard to find, try a trade ad here and on CMP.

DRB - read the last sentence of his post...
It is my understanding that most of the last 90,000 or so Garands the CMP received were returns from Greece. That is also why the CMP had/has millions of rounds of Greek 30-06, the Greeks no longer...
Nothing special if cut - all -6 op rods are curved.
Hmmm - 30-06 M1A?
What auction site is it on?
Do you have a link other than the picture?
Seen them on two original rifles.
+1 on what Danny said. I've tried to use MinnWax but it never gave me the result I wanted. You can use BLO or pure Tung oil (NO tung oil FINISH which contains varnish) or Fairtrimmers Military OX. ...
Thanks to all who replied to my question.
Is there anything different I have to do to ship a Garand to an 01 FFL in California versus other states?
Thanks!! AL in MN
Great site Rick, thanks!
How do I sign up?
The CMP sells walnut stocks. Complete rifles have been sold with either birch or walnut stocks. The one in the photo looks birch.

What a wonderful picture, you are fortunate to have this family history.
+1 Woody, Ricky is clueless.
+1 Little Lee.
CMP is in business to make money to fund shooting programs, besides there are now annual limits on ammo purchases.
Still the best deal out there for non-corrosive, good quality 30-06.
